Back when ABS-CBN was still in
the air, and even further back for almost two decades the Kapamilya network’s
weather report on their early-evening news program was delivered by a memorable
face. “Kuya” Kim Atienza built off an early career in radio to join ABS-CBN’s
news and media programming, for early-morning shows and evening weather
presentation. Like his predecessor the late Ernie Baron, Atienza got to expand
his post-report trivia sections into a full-blown science-environmental edutainment
show, “Matanglawin.” It aired from 2008 to 2020 when ABS-CBN was shut down, cable
reruns airing on A2Z and Knowledge Channel. What about Kuya Kim? He became a
Kapuso.
As The Manila Bulletin tells it, Kim Atienza finally materialized his
earlier intent of moving from ABS-CBN to GMA7 when he appeared on the Sunday,
October 4 airing of the “24 Oras” news program as a segment anchor. Atienza initially
announced his network move on September 29. In addition to the above, he also
has other segment and program hosting stints in store at the Kapuso Network and
GTV, marking the end of 17 years as a Kapamilya of ABS-CBN.
Such a bold transfer by a
longtime face of a major Philippine TV network was not without the media buzz
in its wake. His decision was speculated on and even criticized by Kapamilya
loyalists following the network’s cable endeavors on Kapamilya Channel and A2Z.
But in a recent media conference Kuya Kim came clean on the reasoning behind
his network transfer: an attempt to grow beyond his niche as the weather
reporter and edutainment host. “I wanted to grow and to explore,” he said at
that press-con. “I felt like if I stayed on, I would retire as a weatherman.”
In addition to becoming part of
GMA7’s “24 Oras” news team, Kim Atienza is tapped to join Camille Prats and Iya
Villania as the standout male segment host of talk show “Mars Pa More,” airing
on the Kapuso network and GTV. His GTV-exclusive hosting stint is for “Dapat
Alam Mo!” a news magazine show airing in the afternoons and will open for the
simulcast of “24 Oras” on that free-to-air channel. A change of network, Atienza
promises, will help him show a new side of himself on TV saying, “This will be
a much better, improved, more passionate Kuya Kim.”
