In terms of South Korean
entertainment, actor Park Seo-joon already has a solid rep. Whether in the big
screen or small, his filmography contains some very notable roles. He had
starring roles in Koreanovelas such as “Hwarang” (2016) and “What’s Wrong with
Secretary Kim” (2018), with these two in particular being among many that was
exported to Asian TV networks and Netflix. He even got a cameo in 2019’s “Parasite”
by director Bong Joon-ho, the first South Korean movie to win Best Picture at
the Oscars. Now, word is that Park is breaking into Hollywood as well, and in the
Marvel Cinematic Universe to boot.
Collider tells us that Park Seo-joon’s agency may have confirmed
the South Korean star’s involvement in a Marvel Studios project. Awesome
Entertainment announced this past Friday, September 3, that Park flew from
South Korea to the US to begin work on said movie. While the agency only mentioned
Marvel Studios, they did not elaborate on which installment of the MCU
franchise the actor will be cast in. There have been rumors since this past
June that pegs Park as being tapped for the sequel of 2019’s MCU Phase 3 film “Captain
Marvel,” titled “The Marvels.”
“Park Seo-joon confirmed his
appearance in the Marvel Studios movie and left the country this afternoon,”
read the official statement from Park’s agent as given to The Korea Times. “I am well aware that many people are curious
about the name of the work, the character, the filming location, and the
filming period, but detailed information about the movie will be announced at a
later date.” Already, a number of internet sources on “The Marvels” have added
Park’s name to the confirmed cast, though is role his listed as undisclosed.
“The Marvels”
brings together the titular “Captain Marvel” Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) with
two characters tangentially related to her in the original Marvel Comics,
Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). Parris’ Rambeau
first appeared as a child played by sisters Azari and Akira Akbar in “Captain
Marvel” (set in the 1990s) before reappearing as an adult agent of SWORD in the
Disney+ limited series “WandaVision,” which depicts her gaining energy
absorption powers. Vellani’s Kamala is a teenaged Pakistani-American fan-girl
of superheroes, particularly Danvers, who gains shape-altering abilities and
will star in her own Disney+ limited series, “Ms. Marvel,” premiering in late
2021. “The Marvels,” which also stars Zawe Ashton, is scheduled for release in
November of 2022.
Other South Korean
actors that have been part of the MCU include Claudia Kim as Dr. Helen Cho in “Avengers:
Age of Ultron” (2015) and Ma Dong-seok, who portrays Gilgamesh in upcoming MCU
Phase 4 movie “Eternals,” releasing this November.
