In 2000, ABS-CBN launched several
music video programs under the blanket name MYX on their UHF channel Studio 23.
Reception was positive enough that by 2002, MYX has become its own 24-hour
music video cable channel, snaring the hearts of Filipino youth where several attempts
at an MTV Philippines (separate from MTV Asia) would flounder and fail. MYX
even branched out to the US in return, and even as the main ABS-CBN free-TV
channel remains inactive, MYX and its fellow related cable channels continue as
usual. Proving its longevity even in the face of pandemic, MYX is readying its
2021 MYX Awards this weekend, featuring local and international recording artists.
The Manila Bulletin has it that MYX got a formidable selection of featured performers for their
upcoming MYX Awards show for this year. The virtual nature of the program, for
COVID safety reasons, only seems to work in its favor in pulling some of the
biggest artists in the local and global music scene, despite its award
categories’ primary focus being on the former. That is a surefire indicator
that MYX is already the one name the world associates with music videos in the
Philippines.
For local performers in the MYX
Awards, the music channel has lined up the likes of Inigo Pascual, KZ
Tandingan, Yeng Constantino, Noel Cabangon, Cookie Chua, Bayang Barriors, Rico
Blanco, Maris Racal, Ben&Ben, BGYO, SB19, and more. For the foreign acts,
no less than the likes of Ed Sheeran, Pink Sweat$, Lukas Graham, AJ Mitchell,
Alec Benjamin, New Hope Club and a slew of other stars whose music have been
heard on MYX across its MV shows and chart countdowns. And the entire award proceedings
will be hosted by Edward Barber and MYX VJs Samm Alvero and Ai Dela Cruz.
Non-musical guests to be expected
at the 2021 MYX Awards include Gerald Anderson, James Reid, Maymay Entrata, and
Ogie Alcasid among others. Former VJ Luis Manzano will also be there. As is
tradition, winners of the MYX Awards this year will be determined from the
nominees by fan vote and artist poll, in a 60-40 percent split. One new award
to be given out this year is the Kumu Music Streamer, for the top Pinoy artist
to stream on local community app kumu. Catch the MYX Awards live this Saturday,
August 7 at MYX Global social media on kumu, YouTube, Twitter, TikTok and
Facebook. A TV broadcast of the event will come later in August 14, on MYX
(SKYcable ch. 23 and Cignal ch. 150).
