Begun as a manga in 1987 by
Hirohiko Araki, the bizarrely-titled “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” remained mostly
in Japan until it received several media adaptations in the following decades.
From videogames to direct-to-video anime, the series gradually became known as
a fountain of memes worldwide, thanks to Araki’s fabulously stylistic character
designs and naming sense, with people and super-powers named after Western
songs and recording artists. The TV anime series from David Production that
premiered in 2012 only made the anime world “JoJo”-crazy. After five arcs, the
anime comes into its sixth story with “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean,”
premiering during the holidays in Japan, and worldwide on Netflix to boot.
Polygon tells us that a first full trailer for “JoJo’s Bizarre
Adventure: Stone Ocean” came out over this past weekend, following a teaser
shown back in April. “Stone Ocean” takes place in the US in the year 2011, and
focuses on Jolyne Cujoh, daughter of “Stardust Crusaders” main character Jotaro
Cujoh and the latest member of the Joestar bloodline to find herself in a dark,
bizarre and supernatural adventure. But the challenges facing her are far more
malevolent than anything her family has faced before, and the consequences more
dire.
As seen in the trailer, Jolyne
Cujoh finds herself sentenced to 15 years at the Green Dolphin Street Prison
for a crime she insists she did not commit. She already has her hands full
trying to survive in an environment with violent convicts and corrupt security
personnel, while trying to find fellow inmates who might be sympathetic to her.
Then Jolyne’s father Jotaro visits her with a warning that she was framed for
the crime, so that she could be easily murdered in prison by a mysterious
party. Jolyne would rather not associate with her father who left her family
without explanation, but then things suddenly become much more sinister.
After Jotaro is incapacitated by
the prison’s chaplain using a power called Stand, Jolyne and some of her fellow
prisoners also awaken their own Stand powers and plan to escape. But the
chaplain, Enrico Pucci by name, has bigger designs, all borne from a plan
created by the longtime enemy of the Joestars, DIO. As she tries to keep her
father alive and stop Pucci’s plot, can Jolyne somehow user her Stand to free
herself from her prison, which she describes as a “Stone Ocean”?
“JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone
Ocean” premieres this coming December on Netflix for streaming, and on Tokyo
MX, MBS and BS11 for Japanese TV broadcast the following year, on January 2022.
Previous seasons of the anime also stream on Netflix as well as Hulu and
Crunchyroll.
