Have you ever look at a series of
events from a narrative, whether in real-life or fiction, and wondered how
differently the story would go with a little divergence here or there? If
Abraham Lincoln decided not to go to the theater on the day of his assassination,
or if Ned Stark does not get executed in “Game of Thrones,” how does their
history or tale change? Creating new stories from divergences of canon events
has been something the big two American comic-book publishers have been old
hats in. Now, Marvel is looking to apply that thought exercise to their MCU
Films, via an upcoming streaming animated series on Disney+.
Variety tells us that Marvel Studios has rolled out the first
official trailer for “What If…?” an animated anthology that is part of the
Marvel Cinematic Universe but not exactly. That is because, as the title itself
implies, each episode will follow an alternative MCU story that diverges from
altered events in the canon timeline. Earlier teasers of “What If…?” in past
Disney events have already showcased an Agent Peggy Carter who underwent the
Super Solider procedure in World War II. Now, the trailer showcases even more “what
if” scenarios.
The first scene of the trailer
would be familiar to MCU Fans from the very beginning of the franchise. Tony
Stark – before becoming Iron Man – is riding a military convoy in Afghanistan
when it is ambushed. He stumbles outside and sees a Stark Industries-made
rocket land next to him…which is picked up and thrown into the air where it
explodes harmlessly. The new arrival…is then-US spec-ops operator Erik “Killmonger”
Stevens, before making his sinister move on Wakanda in “Black Panther.” Where
does that encounter lead?
And changing the start of the
first “Iron Man” film is merely the beginning. What if Dr. Stephen Strange had
a different introduction to magic? What if the Avengers became zombies? What if
young T’Challa was abducted by the Ravager Yondo and end up leading the
Guardians of the Galaxy? All these divergent MCU events are narrated by Jeffrey
Wright, who portrays the cosmic entity Uatu the Watcher, non-interfering
observer of the multiverse. He is joined in the voice cast by nearly all
pertinent MCU film actors reprising their roles, including the late Chadwick
Boseman as T’Challa in probably the last project of his to be released after
his death.
Marvel’s “What If…?” premieres on
Disney+ this August 11. It is the next MCU series to arrive on the streaming
service following “Loki” which concludes its first season next Wednesday.
