Perhaps for many on the online
world, the name Dubsmash is associated with a video-sharing app allowing users
to record themselves dubbing over pieces of audio from pop media. In the
Philippines, that merely evokes the name of its most prominent local user,
Maine Mendoza. After a sudden prominence in 2015 thanks to hosting her Dubsmash
videos on Facebook, she got into GMA7’s noontime variety show “Eat Bulaga!” as
a bit character for a drama parody segment. Then she and Kapuso heartthrob
Alden Richards became a love team in that segment, leading to Mendoza becoming
a GMA7 regular herself. Could you imagine that it has been six years since
then?
Even Maine Mendoza seems rather
overwhelmed at how long she has been in the Philippine showbiz limelight
according to Inquirer.net, which
posted a post by her on Twitter this past Sunday. The tweet, dated July 4, has Mendoza
noting that she has been active in the entertainment scene for six years. “It’s
really fast!” exclaims Maine (Nicomaine Del Capili Mendoza in full). “So much
has happened also and I can’t wish for anything more. Thank you for your
continuing support and love. Love you all.”
6th year today. Ang bilis talaga! Ang dami na ding nangyari at wala na akong mahihiling pa. Maraming salamat sa mga patuloy na sumusuporta at nagmamahal. Mahal ko kayo. ♥️

Her meteoric rise to TV stardom
is certainly unexpected for somebody who finished a Hotel & Restaurant Management
degree in De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (she even interned at a Victorian-era
resort hotel in New York, which is likely where Maine discovered Dubsmash).
Mendoza’s flair for emoting while dubbing audio samples led to her introduction
as Yaya Dub in the “Eat Bulaga!” segment “Juan for All, All for One,” where a
stray smile while interacting over video with show co-host Alden Richards led
to their being paired as the iconic “AlDub” tandem. The two were the
centerpiece of the in-show unscripted/improv drama parody “Kalyeserye,” which
ran 2015 to 2016.
Success in television led to
forays in film (some costarring with Alden) and even recording for Maine
Mendoza. To date, nearly a half-decade since “Kalyeserye” concluded, she
remains a prominent host in “Eat Bulaga!” especially during the pandemic months
when principal hosts such as Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon could only appear on
the set via video feed. Maine is also currently a notable celebrity endorser
for getting vaccinated against COVID-19, especially as she has received her own
first dose back in June 21.
