“SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2” Set Photos Confirm KNUCKLES THE ECHIDNA Co-Starring

Paramount Pictures’ live-action/CGI adaptation of legendary Sega videogame “Sonic the Hedgehog” in early 2020 was a prime example of a film that made just the right changes in response to negative fan feedback to win them back over with a great film, original franchise-wise. Thus, when “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” was announced this past February, fans were already excited, especially when filming commenced in the following March. There is speculation on what to expect for the sequel, though the first film’s post-credits scene (and second movie’s logo) already spoiled that Sonic’s game sidekick Tails is in. But he is not the only one to join.

Screen Rant got hold of some telltale photos on the scene with the filming of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” from Paramount Pictures, which would indicate that the second most prominent playable character from that videogame franchise by Sega is also present for the follow-up to the 2020 blockbuster. The filming location on Fort Langley, British Columbia depicts a battle-scarred urban scene, where camera crews are positioning to-life-scale models of Sonic the Hedgehog on the street as reference on where to put the CGI character in post-production. And while Tails is present there is a third humanoid animal in the mix.

Fans of the “Sonic” franchise would know him as Knuckles, the red echidna with the spiked hair and fists who was initially a rival to the blue super-fast hedgehog before becoming an ally. Having the primary three characters of the original games on the Sega Genesis for just the first sequel alone is already a major coup. One other factor to consider is who will voice Knuckles. Comedy actor Ben Schwarz was a hit as Sonic, while Tails was reprised by his videogame voice actress Colleen O'Shaughnessey. While nothing is confirmed, a prevailing rumor is that Jason Momoa (“Aquaman”) is being considered to voice Knuckles.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” brings back the primary cast from the 2020 film, with Schwarz accompanied by James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and veteran comedian Jim Carrey as the antagonist Dr. “Eggman” Robotnik. Also returning is director Jeff Fowler and writers Josh Miller and Pat Casey. The film is expected to release from Paramount Pictures next year, on April 8, 2022.
