Much as the world is trying its
best to get things back to normal after the mess that was 2020 and the global
COVID-19 pandemic, the bitter truth is that “normal” is not coming back as fast
as we would like, particularly before this current year is done. Some 2020
movies that were moved to early 2021 got pushed back to middle or even later
2021 because cinemas cannot be packed with people just yet. The Same goes for
beauty pageants, with the 2020 edition of Miss Universe, happening this May
instead. The Binibining Pilipinas moved its 2020 pageant first to this April,
but have moved it again several months.
CNN Philippines reports that the national Binibining Pilipinas
pageant has decided to postpone their 2020/2021 edition coronation night from
this month to July 27. This was confirmed on social media by the Binibining
Pilipinas Charities Inc. this past Tuesday, April 13. In their brief statement
on Facebook, the BPCI explained that the moving of the coronation night was to
ensure the safety and welfare of the staff and contestants from the threat of
COVID-19 infection. They also assured the public that they strive to comply
with government health protocol regulations.
A reason for the postponement is
not hard to find. Currently Metro Manila is under modified enhanced community
quarantine (MECQ), enough of a restriction to prevent entertainment venues from
operating. This is going to mean an extra three months or so of more waiting
for the candidates for Binibining Pilipinas, who have been left hanging for
much of 2020 after the organization postponed the pageant indefinitely. This
was a pickle because Miss Grand International was being held in Thailand as
planned, forcing BPCI to handpick 2018-19 Binibining Pilipinas second runner-up
Samantha Bernardo to represent. She would win first runner-up then.
Winners of the Binibining
Pilipinas pageant get to represent one major worldwide competition in Miss
International, plus other pageants such as Miss Globe, Miss Grand International
and Miss Intercontinental. Despite losing representation franchises to Miss
Universe and Miss World, this remains the first name in beauty pageants for the
Philippines. While the wait is on until the new coronation night date, there
will be virtual activities to keep the candidates in the public eye online.
