One of the best parts of 2004’s “Spider-Man
2,” the second installment of the original Sony Pictures Marvel movie trilogy
directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, would be its big bad. Otto
Octavius, aka Doctor Octopus, was a particularly formidable nemesis for the Friendly
Neighborhood superhero, made all the better by his being portrayed by actor
Alfred Molina. As more info has been gradually shared about “Spider-Man: No Way
Home,” the third MCU-connected “Spider-Man” film, it was announced that one
villain for it is Doc Ock, and that he will be played by Molina again. While
taken as gospel, there was no official confirmation until Molina did so.
Comic Book Resources tells us that there is now definitive
confirmation that upcoming MCU film “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will indeed have notable
Spidey nemesis Doctor Octopus as one of the bad guys, and that Alfred Molina is
reprising the role from the Raimi-Maguire trilogy. This was confirmed by the
actor himself, explaining why he said nothing at first and then why he finally
came to the open with it. It was the simple reason of being told to keep quiet
by the studio, then deciding to break the news since the public is already sure
it was already set.
Molina, who has also been in “The
Da Vinci Code” (2006), “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (2018) and “Frozen II”
(2019), remarked that the production ordered complete secrecy on the casting
while “No Way Home” was still being filmed. "But, you know, it's all over
the internet,” he says. “I actually described myself as the worst kept secret
in Hollywood!" Regarding his return to the character after 17 years, the
British actor described it as wonderful and interesting, considering he is now
significantly older, as well as in less shape.
On interesting tidbit that Alfred
Molina shared was that his narrative as Otto/Doctor Octopus was going to carry
on from Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2,” which ended with his apparent death in a heroic
sacrifice. In addition, he might also be the recipient of some good old MCU
digital de-aging as was done with so many of the characters and their respective
actors: Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert Downey
Jr., Kurt Russell, Clark Gregg and more. His cryptic info on the character
seems to somehow tie in to the multi-verse theory that will be prominent in the
MCU Phase 4.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” stars
Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon and Marisa Tomei, with appearances from
Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and allegedly Charlie Cox reprising as
Daredevil from the Marvel-Netflix series. Directed by Jon Watts, it premieres
December 17.
