In 2015, British TV network BBC
One premiered a drama series that would be the foundation of a modest global
franchise. “Doctor Foster,” starring Suzanne Jones, Bertie Carvel and Jodie
Comer, takes elements from the Greek myth of Medea and crafts a modern tale of
a female doctor who suspects her husband of adultery, and the grim and dark domestic
chaos that ensues. This series, created by Mike Bartlett, has been adapted by
several countries around the world, such as South Korea’s “The World of the
Married” which aired on JTBC last 2020. Now, the Kapamilya company will be making
their own take on it.
The Manila Bulletin reports that ABS-CBN Corporation and BBC
Studios have entered into an agreement for the former to adapt the latter’s “Doctor
Foster” drama series into a new teleserye. A press statement by the Kapamilya
network announced that theirs will be the sixth international license of the
show, which has already been adapted by, other than South Korea as mentioned,
France, Russia, India and Turkey. The “Doctor Foster” story of a successful
career woman learning that her husband has been having an affair and her
increasingly malevolent acts of retribution sounds like some prime viewing material
for Filipino audiences.
It being a Kapamilya project, it
now begs the question of which ABS-CBN talents not currently involved (or less busy)
in any of their currently-running teleseryes will take the plunge in adapting “Doctor
Foster.” The titular character of Gemma Foster (or whatever her Filipino name
would be) is now being tossed up in related social media discussion between
Judy Ann Santos and Charlie Dizon. A half-hearted suggestion that would add
uncomfortable real-life subtext to the proceedings has been of Gerald Anderson,
Julia Barretto and Bea Alonzo. It probably would never pass muster with the
studio.
ABS-CBN snagging an adaptation license
from a major international network means the Kapamilya company has not been too
hobbled by the loss of their free-TV network. Their programs still manage to
air simulcast on several cable channels as well as with former rival network
TV5. Their Pinoy remake of “Doctor Foster” will likely follow this route,
considering that they are shooting for a 2021 premiere.
