THE CW Renews “SUPERMAN & LOIS” for a SECOND SEASON

If somebody watching superhero TV shows were to be asked who they think is a “new” character of that genre who has done remarkably in “winning” the audience over, there’s a good chance that Superman of “Supergirl” would be mentioned. Fully introduced in the series’ second season (and first in The CW), the character as played by Tyler Hoechlin was initially perceived by viewers as unremarkable compared to other Superman actors, but won them over in subsequent season appearances. It is no wonder that he got his own spinoff with Elizabeth Tulloch, “Superman & Lois,” which premiered February 23. Only two episodes in and the series has already been renewed.

Comic Book Resources tells us that “Superman & Lois” has been confirmed for a second season by The CW, just around the same time as the second episode for its inaugural season aired on Tuesday, March 2. Then again, from how the pilot was received last February, the renewal was not much of a surprise. From being a recurring/guest character on “Supergirl” Superman, or rather his actor Tyler Hoechlin, is now able to flex some lead role star power on this new show, with the help of his supporting cast.

The CW Network CEO and Chairman Mark Pedowitz remarked on how an important factor for the runaway success of “Superman & Lois” from its pilot was due to its appearing on other platforms. The cable network TNT ran an encore broadcast as a lead-in to a behind-the-scenes special, “Legacy of Hope,” while Canada gets to see the show on CTV Sci-Fi Channel. And of course, there is the streaming release to consider. Pedowitz says this was testament to the production crew and cast’s creativity and dedication, considering that the series was shot under restrictive COVID safety regulations on the set.

“Superman & Lois” builds on the post “Crisis on Infinite Earths” status quo detailing the lives of Superman/Clark Kent (Hoechlin) and his wife Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch), who have returned to Clark’s hometown of Smallville, Kansas following his firing from the Daily Planet and the death of his mother. There, he must juggle his multiple roles of superhero, media-man and parent, investigating the business activities of mogul Morgan Edge (Adam Raynor) in the town, helping his sons cope with the reveal of his identity, particularly socially-anxious Jordan (Alex Garfin) who inherited his super-powers, and tracking down a stranger (Wole Parks) sabotaging US power plants, revealed (in-audience) as an alternate-universe Luthor.

The series also stars Jordan Elsass, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Dylan Walsh, Erik Valdez Inde Navarrette and Angus MacFadyen. “Superman & Lois” airs Tuesdays on The CW.
