PRINCE HARRY and DUCHESS MEGHAN Sit Down for Intense OPRAH INTERVIEW, Coming SUNDAY on CBS

Among the key events that happened in the world early last year before the pandemic trumped almost all other news, was the announcement by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, that they were stepping back and relinquishing roles as active senior members of the British Royal Family. Their decision to leave and relocate to the US earned both sympathetic support and scathing criticism, the latter primarily from British press, painting the picture that Meghan, a former actress, put Harry up to it. The Sussexes have not spoken of their side in the story, until a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey airing on CBS next Sunday.

CNN has it that CBS will be airing an exclusive interview by Oprah with Prince Harry and Meghan as a special this coming March 7. The Sussex interview, shot on a peaceful outdoor set, looks to contrast the tense words that will come from the Duke and Duchess regarding their time spent as British Royals and the circumstances that led to the ‘stepping back” that uncharitable media would label “Megxit.” Prince Harry looks to be anticipating this opportunity to voice his sentiments, seeing as a teased portion of the special had him comparing his wife to his mother, Princess Diana.

Oprah says during the initial part of the footage that no subject will be off-limits in her interview with the Sussexes. Harry later remarks on the good fortune he feels to be able to let the air out with Meghan at his side adding, “I can't begin to imagine what it must have been like for her, going through this process by herself all those years ago." The reference is clearly about the late Princess of Wales, who was vilified by British press following her divorce from Prince Charles before dying in a 1997 Paris road accident, pursued by Paparazzi.

The CBS teaser does a sharp-tongued job at working hype for the full interview, featuring Oprah Winfrey asking questions to the Prince and Duchess with the replies withheld, questions like “Were you silent, or were you silenced?” This would be the first major public speaking engagement the “inactive” Sussex Royals will have after the initial announcement in January 2020 (and their effective departure from Royal duties in the following March). This interview comes two weeks following the announcement of Meghan’s third pregnancy (her second was a 2020 miscarriage), and their confirmed permanent Royal duty retirement.
