Stories told of the “Star Wars”
universe immediately after the events of the prequel film “Revenge of the Sith”
are interesting narratives for fans of the whole franchise. To recap, that was
when Republic Chancellor/Sith Lord Palpatine successfully corrupts Jedi Knight
Anakin Skywalker into his apprentice Darth Vader, turns the Republic into the
Galactic Empire, and uses the Clone Army to exterminate the Jedi, while Jedi
Masters Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi flee to exile after hiding Anakin’s children.
Disney+ streaming has decided to do a big series of those early dark times
focusing on Obi-Wan, with prequel actor Ewan McGregor reprising. Recently the
production start and official cast were revealed.
CNN tells us that Disney+ has dropped its biggest chunk of info for
their upcoming “Star Wars” series titled “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” Much of the positive
reception to this spinoff is courtesy of the so-far two-season success of pioneering
show “The Mandalorian” on the exclusive Disney streaming platform, as well as
the principal protagonist and antagonist being played by their respective movie
portrayers. There is still no solid release date for “Kenobi,” but Disney+ has
stated that they will begin principal photography sometime in April. Meanwhile,
they are introducing the entire cast of “Kenobi” so far.
Ewan McGregor and Hayden
Christensen as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader are already
given names. The same goes for Indira Varma (“Game of Thrones”), but now the
cast list has been expanded to include the following: Joel Edgerton, Moses
Ingram (“The Queen’s Gambit”), Kumail Nanjiani (“Adventure Time”), Bonnie
Piesse, Rupert Friend (“Hitman: Agent 47”), Simone Kessell (“San Andreas”),
Sung Kang (Han from “Fast and Furious” franchise), O’Shea “OMG” Jackson Jr. (“Godzilla:
King of the Monsters”), and Benny Safdie. Edgerton and Piesse portrayed young
versions of Luke Skywalker’s Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru in the prequels, so their
roles in the “Kenobi” series are clear.
“Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi” will
be directed by Deborah Chow, director of two episodes of “The Mandalorian.”
Ewan McGregor himself is executive producer along with Chow, Michelle Rejwan
and Kathleen Kennedy. Joby Harold is writing the series, which again will come
out on Disney+ after “The Book of Boba Fett” and perhaps “Mandalorian” season 3.
