The year 2020, or most of it,
could almost come across as the year that nothing happened. Quarantines spurred
by the pandemic caused many annual events that were supposed to happen that
year to move to the following year instead. There were movie and TV premieres,
to sports tournaments and extravaganzas like the Summer Olympic Games, to
beauty pageants as well. The 69th Miss Universe competition, which would
have been in fall or winter of 2020, got bumped to May this 2021 instead. The
same deal has happened with the Miss World pageant, only its skip was one year
long.
According to CNN Philippines, the Miss World Organization has pegged December 16
way later this year to be the date for their 70th Miss World beauty
pageant. The MWO revealed this in an official announcement video on YouTube, a
lengthy piece due to the fact that, this being the seventieth time that the
pageant has been held it is a milestone to celebrate. Following a retrospective
on Miss World in the past and its evolution to its present form (featuring
cross-event promotions with the aforementioned Olympics and the FIFA World Cup,
plus the pageant’s social media revolution), the video reveals what other
events are coming.
Aside from the pageant proper and
the “Head to Head Challenge” online shows that debuted in the 2017 competition,
Miss World in 2021 will be showcasing an anniversary event where past Miss
World winners over the decades will return to the spotlight. The pageant night
itself, to be held at Coca-Cola Music Hall in San Juan, Puerto Rico will be
three hours long and be telecast globally. The reigning Miss World from 2019,
Miss Jamaica Tori-Ann Singh, will be ready to crown the next Miss World this coming
December 16.
