SONY Adapting “TWISTED METAL” Games Into LIVE-ACTION SERIES Via PLAYSTATION PRODUCTIONS

In 1995, when Sony’s first ever PlayStation was still a relatively fresh new commodity in the videogame industry and gaming community, one of the first big US-developed titles for the console was “Twisted Metal,” which pioneered the “vehicular combat” genre of games in this system. Its overall plot in several games up to the PS3 was the titular demolition derby tournament featuring a darkly colorful ensemble of characters ranging from psycho to demonic. The last installment of the franchise was in 2012, but after nearly a decade in limbo, Sony is looking to resurrect “Twisted Metal” as a live-action series.

IGN reports that Sony is looking to adapt yet another major (if long-inactive) franchise of their gaming library as a series. “Twisted Metal” is the first name longtime PlayStation gamers would mention in terms of vehicular combat gameplay, and it will be the newest series being developed by PlayStation Productions, Sony’s studio arm for videogame adaptations. Owing to the grim yet action-packed atmosphere of the source games, it is only fitting that the creative minds assembled for the production be appropriate. “Deadpool” and “Zombieland” screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are on writing duty, while Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” writer/executive producer Michael Jonathan Smith is show-runner.

PlayStation Productions chief Asad Qizilbash described “Twisted Metal” as one of the most beloved franchises on the PS line of consoles. Of the creative team he notes, “We are thrilled to have such a great team working on bringing this iconic game to life for the fans.” Actor-producer Will Arnett (“LEGO Batman”) is also said to be on board with the producers, and rumor has it that he could be tapped to voice one of the series’ iconic characters: Sweet Tooth, the mass-murdering clown who drives a weaponized ice-cream truck.

Initial info on the plot for the planned “Twisted Metal” series has it taking place in a post-apocalyptic world, where a yet-undefined protagonist character is promised a chance to better his prospects in life if he can deliver some cargo across a wasteland area. The only other element known regarding the plot is the presence of Sweet Tooth, though is role is unknown. Also unrevealed at the moment is when production will actually start, and what network or streaming platform will carry the “Twisted Metal” series when it is complete.
