With “WandaVision” blazing the
way, it looks like the Disney+ corner of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe
is shaping up to have a good start. According to the scheduling for the franchise’s
Phase 4, after some alterations brought about by the COVID pandemic, the next
series to premiere with be “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” starring
Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan as Captain America’s most iconic sidekicks/partners
Sam Wilson/Falcon and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier. While a few teasers of the
show have already been put up, it was the trailer that premiered during Super
Bowl LV that offers the most information about the overall story.
Comic Book Resources would have it that the Super Bowl commercial
trailer for Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” confirms that
the titular MCU characters will be taking on the most human and the most
formidable antagonist of the franchise; that is of course if the two of them
can just stop antagonizing each other first. The preview begins with Anthony
Mackie’s Sam and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky in what appears to be an anger
management or counseling session. The counselor asks Bucky why Sam aggravates
him. Cue scenes.
We see the Winter Soldier put off
by Falcon’s attitude during a mission involving a deployment from a cargo
plane. Sam jumps out in his flying rig while Bucky…stays put. Then we cut to
(seemingly) the main baddie, Helmut Zemo (Daniel Bruhl), having escaped from
imprisonment in “Captain America: Civil War” to continue his vendetta against
costumed heroes. He now wears his comic-book-accurate purple facemask, and
leads an anarchist group called the Flag-Smashers, of which one member is
portrayed by Erin Kellyman. While the two main characters ponder Steve Rogers’
post-Endgame “retirement,” the government has introduced a replacement/successor,
John Walker (Wyatt Russell), wearing a Cap-like costume, carrying a shield, but
is more militaristic in tone.
While Sam and Bucky investigate
Zemo’s and Walker’s activities, they cross paths with former SHIELD agent (and Cap
observer) Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), niece of the original Agent Carter.
Together they take on the Flag-Smashers before something critical breaks, and
it is depicted in awesome action scenes and physical fight sequences. Where
this will lead, one will have to watch “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” to
find out. It premieres March 19 on Disney+.
