When COVID-19 shuttered cinemas
and forced blockbuster films to either delay release or go streaming, one
question in mind would be: Is there anything or anyone to give awards to by
early next year? Of course; and it would be silly not to. For instance, the
Golden Globes not only gives awards to films but also to TV content, and
already the definition of the former already rule out the necessity of having
to release in a movie theater. Speculations on which films and series will get
a chance to win a Golden Globe have been intense the past few days. Now, we
know them.
Vanity Fair tells us that the nominees for the 78th
Golden Globe Awards later this month have finally been revealed as of this past
Wednesday, February 3. Taraji P. Henson and Sarah Jessica Parker announced the
lucky movies and shows, a solid portion of which hail from streaming platforms.
Speaking of which, this is certainly another coup for Netflix, in that it has
several films and series in the list and with multiple nominations too.
For instance, not only did
Netflix get great reception for their movie “Mank” (about screenwriter Herman
J. Mankiewicz and the development of “Citizen Kane”), but also from “The Trial
of the Chicago 7,” which Paramount Pictures made available to them after a 2020
cinema premiere became impossible. Between these two, 11 nominations already
belong to Netflix. Other streaming services would not let that go unchallenged however.
Hulu has “Nomadland” while Amazon’s Prime Video got Sascha Baron Cohen’s “Borat
Subsequent MovieFilm” sequel to his 2006 blockbuster. And Disney+ has got two
nominations for its stage recording of hit musical “Hamilton,” one for the film
itself and another for Lin-Manuel Miranda as Best Actor, Motion Picture –
Drama.
Netflix domination is still in
effect over at the TV nominee list. Be it Drama or Musical/Comedy, the
streaming giant and its content are up for contention. “The Crown” is still
going strong with six nominations total for Drama, while “Emily in Paris”
represents Netflix in Comedy Series. Here though the battlefield is more
contentious with rivals in “The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max), “The Great”
(Hulu), Ted Lasso (Apple TV+) and lone TV network entry “Schitt’s Creek.” It is
not surprising to find Disney+ in this side too, but only for a lone nomination
with “Star Wars” spinoff “The Mandalorian.”
There is a sort of real-life
parallel in the TV acting nomination for drama, in that “The Crown” stars Olivia
Colman and Emma Corrin are both nominated for Best Actress. That would be Queen
Elizabeth II and Princess Diana, respectively. Meanwhile for the supporting
actress category, Gillian Anderson’s Margaret Thatcher and Helena Bonham Carter’s
Princess Margaret go head to head. Finally, Josh O’Connor rounds up the Netflix
nominations for “The Crown,” being nominated for Best Actor, Drama as Prince
Charles.
The 78th Golden
Globes, having been delayed two months from its usual awarding period, will be
held February 28 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills and The Rainbow Room at
Manhattan, New York. It will be aired on NBC.
