GOLDEN GLOBE Nominees REAPPEAR in Upcoming SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARD

 

The Golden Globes are not the only awards that cover categories on both the big and small screens. Another accolade that gives honors to achievements by productions and people in both movies and television is the Screen Actors Guild Awards. While not quite as storied in history as the Golden Globes, inaugurated only in 1995 compared to the latter’s 1944, the SAG has become influential enough that its nominees and winners tend to see better prospects at, say, the Oscars. Not long after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed their nominees for the 78^th Golden Globes later this month, SAG-AFTRA announced their latest nominees too.

Entertainment Tonight tells us that the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has decided on their nominees for the 27^th SAG Awards this coming April. The nominations were given via social media this past Thursday, February 4, as Daveed Diggs and Lily Collins read out the names over Instagram Live. As the Screen Actors Guild emphasizes performances by individual actors or ensembles, the closest analogue to a Best Picture would be SAG’s Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Here, only one film recently nominated in the Golden Globes returns, “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” It is notable as, despite the movie being based on Vietnam War-era US history, three of the main cast members were British yet convincingly American in acting. Other nominees for Motion Picture cast are “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (final film of the late Chadwick Boseman),”Da 5 Bloods,” Korean-American dramedy “Minari” and “One Night in Miami.” Boseman gets a shot for Outstanding Lead Actor, going against fellow Golden Globe nominees Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman. Amy Adams and Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s”) are two of those competing for Outstanding Lead Actress. Meanwhile, the Disney-Warner rivalry is reflected in “Mulan” and “Wonder Woman 1984” being nominated for Stunt Ensemble.

Over in the SAG Television categories, Three Golden Globe nominees are at it again for Drama Ensemble: the casts of Netflix’s “The Crown” and “Ozark,” and HBO’s “Lovecraft County.” Netflix hogs the Female Actor Drama category with three names from “The Crown” (same with the Golden Globes) and two from “Ozark.” Nominee announcer Daveed Diggs is himself part of the list for Actor in TV Movie/Limited Series as Lafayette/Jefferson in “Hamilton.” Another Disney+ entry, “The Mandalorian,” is fighting for Outstanding Series Stunt Ensemble against Netflix’s “Cobra Kai,” Prime Video’s “The Boys,” and HBO’s “Lovecraft County.”

The 27^th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles this April 4, and it will be broadcast simultaneously on TNT and TBS.
