For DC Comics character Wonder
Woman, the definitive female superhero, and her fandom, the year 2017 was
momentous in that it saw the first big-budget movie treatment of her from
Warner Bros., leading to a strong box office performance. Anticipation is just
as great for the direct sequel, “Wonder Woman 1984,” which was going to
premiere in the summer of this year only to be delayed to October because of
COVID-19. Both films were directed by Patty Jenkins, whose success with the
first one became the best showing for a female filmmaker yet. And she has ideas
on where hers and Wonder Woman’s journey could go in the coming years.
According to IGN.com, “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins projects that she
could dedicate time to steer the direction of Diana of Themyscira on the big
screen for no more than a movie trilogy. Jenkins revealed this to a
German-language publication, where she remarked that she would take a bow after
a hypothetical “Wonder Woman 3” under Warner Bros. Pictures. This statement
comes across as a follow-up to her earlier sentiment recorded by Total Film Magazine back in June,
regarding what plans she had for a third “Wonder Woman” now that “Wonder Woman
1984” was coming to theaters sometime this year.
Jenkins explained that there were
a number of story beats regarding the DC super-heroine that she could not put
in the 2017 movie without unnecessary bloat, but was able to incorporate in “1984.”
"I was so happy to tell the Wonder Woman origin story,” she says. “It was
almost her birth, but we really haven't seen what she is capable of.” The
filmmaker stressed the importance of showing Wonder Woman with an internal
struggle in spite of her godly strength, best exemplified by how she tries to
help her villains rehabilitate even while fighting them.
"The next one is probably my
last Wonder Woman movie," proclaims Patty Jenkins, adding that she would put
everything she had left to show and tell in that. But that will have to wait
for now. Her June interview with Total
Film noted that no conceptualization for “WW3” is on yet, as she is keeping
an eye on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and determining where that leaves
Warner Bros. as a result. The studio has also floated with her an idea for a
spinoff movie about the Amazons other than Diana, to be produced before the
last of the “trilogy.”
Perhaps she might have more to
share, should she participate in the upcoming WB virtual fan experience “DC
FanDome,” where the creative teams of the studio’s DC superhero movies will be
interviewed for fans. “Wonder Woman 1984” on the other hand, stars Gal Gadot,
Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal, all set to finally premiere this
coming October 2.
