While 2015’s “Jurassic World”
from Universal Pictures did not quite establish a solid character connection to
the earlier “Jurassic Park” films, its 2017 follow-up “Jurassic World: Fallen
Kingdom” remedied that by the reprisal of Jeff Goldblum as chaos theorist Dr. Ian
Malcolm, there for 1993’s “Jurassic Park” and 1997’s “The Lost World.” Still,
the character only serves as an expository device much closer to a cameo in “Fallen
Kingdom” according to some detractors, and they hope the announcement that the
complete original scientist trio of Goldblum, Sam Neill and Laura Dern would be
back for “Jurassic World: Dominion” would mean more substantial roles for them.
As with many major motion
pictures in production, filming for “Jurassic World: Dominion” was briefly
halted months earlier because of COVID-19, resuming again only last month. But
as IGN.com would have it, there may
be some hope that the movie being directed by Colin Trevorrow would indeed not
minimize the presence of three original cast members from the first “Jurassic
Park.” New Zealand actor Sam Neill, who portrayed paleontologist Dr. Alan
Grant, seemed to reassure franchise fans on social media this past Tuesday,
August 4, when he posted a photo of an accessory that is tied aesthetically to
his character.

With the caption “Hello, old
friend” and tags to his cast-mates both original and current (Chris Pratt and
Bryce Dallas Howard), Neill’s Twitter photo of a hat on a stand quickly excited
“Jurassic” franchise fans with over 40,000 likes and 5,000 comments. It should
be recalled that Dr. Grant wore a hat in many of his scenes in the first and
third “Jurassic Park” movies. Interestingly, the fedora depicted is more like
the one from “Jurassic Park III” (2001) in contrast to the 1993 hat, which was woven
from straw.
Not that the fans need any more encouragement
that the “Park” actors will be just as relevant as the current “World” stars.
An earlier interview with Sam Neill also had him saying that he, Laura Dern and
Jeff Goldblum will be present for much of the film as Pratt’s Owen Grady and Howard’s
Claire Dearing. After disappointment from return viewers that Goldblum’s Dr.
Malcolm was just around to testify at a government hearing on the fate of the
Costa Rican island with the titular dinosaur park, it would be nice to see that
any original “Park trilogy” actors and their characters get their fair share.
Picking up from “Fallen Kingdom,”
the film would project the new global status quo where cloned dinosaurs roam
the Earth, encroaching into human communities. Barring any further delays
related to COVID-19 or otherwise, Universal Pictures projects to release “Jurassic
World: Dominion” in June of 2021.
