NIA DACOSTA is NEW DIRECTOR for MCU’s “CAPTAIN MARVEL 2”

The trend established nowadays with superhero films is that, if it stars an actress portraying a super-heroine, then it would be best to have a woman in the director’s chair as well. The results have been quite remarkable too, with Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” (2017) for Warner Bros. being especially cited. Their rival studio and comic book label Marvel Studios answered the challenge with 2019’s “Captain Marvel” directed by Anna Boden (even if in tandem with collaborator Ryan Fleck). With a sequel for the cosmic-powered Marvel heroine portrayed by Brie Larson in development, Marvel Studios has decided to get a new director for the project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios is engaging Nia DaCosta to be the director for their sequel to “Captain Marvel,” which has been slated for release sometime in 2022. This was confirmed sometime in early August, after the previous directing duo of Ryan Fleck an Anna Boden declined to continue from the first one. DaCosta at present is helping promote her latest directorial effort, MGM-Universal’s fourth installment of the supernatural killer film series “Candyman.” This film is a more direct sequel to the original from TriStar Pictures in 1992.

Back to the “Captain Marvel” sequel, the script is being developed by writer Megan McDonnell, who is part of the team working on the MCU Phase 4 series “WandaVision” for Disney+. Where the first film is a prequel set in 1995 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe setting, it is known that the second movie will be occurring in the present day of the MCU, ostensibly as part of the post-“Avengers: Endgame” Phase 4. In a rather accidental bit of synergy, DaCosta will be joined on the “Captain Marvel 2” production by one of her “Candyman” stars, Tenoyah Parris, who will portray the grown-up Monica Rambeau, played as a child by Akira Akbar in the original.

Not much has been definitively known about what the second “Captain Marvel” movie would be about, but its star Brie Larson has long advocated for the project to possibly introduce Kamala Khan, a fairly recent Marvel Comics character who goes by Ms. Marvel, the original hero identity of Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers’ original comic-book character. It just so happens that Marvel Studios does have a planned Disney+ series for the Kamala Khan “Ms. Marvel” under head writer Bisha K. Ali, so it is not yet clear if there will be ties between these two particular installments of the future MCU franchise.

Meanwhile, the “Candyman” film directed by Nia DaCosta, originally slated to premiere in theaters last June 12, has been pushed back to October 16 by the COVID-19 pandemic keeping US cinemas closed. It is unclear if there is an option for MGM-Universal to have the film released alternatively on streaming.
