It can be said that the time
spent by Filipinos at home for a couple of months at least earlier this year
has helped them find some surprise bits of TV entertainment, especially if they
have access to internet streaming. Quite recently there has been a niche buzz
of excitement from streaming viewers in the country about the “Boys Love”
genre, casting a spotlight on genuine romantic relationships between males. If
the lead same-sex duo is as hot as the “Bright-Win” tandem starring in hit Thai
TV drama “2gether: The Series,” then it becomes all the more an audience
magnet.
As GMA News would have it, there will be a greater increase in
mainstream attention for “2gether: The Series” by the end of this month, as it
was announced that the runaway blockbuster rom-com from Thailand’s GMM 25
network will soon be carried by Netflix towards the end of the month. The
worldwide streaming giant has revealed a wide variety of Thai media content
including “2gether” that will be making their streaming debut starting this
July 30. Some of these companions to the attention-grabbing “BL” drama include
movies such as comedy “Tootsies & the Fake” and horror thriller “The Maid.”
“2gether: The Series” stars Vachirawit
Chiva-aree and Metawin Opas-iamkajorn, affectionately nicknamed “Bright” and “Win”
respectively, as university students who initially pretend to have a fake relationship
so that an openly gay admirer of Win’s character Tine would leave him alone. It
does not take a genius to figure out what happens to the “fake-date” idea. The
actors’ native Thailand certainly lapped the story up, and audiences in
Southeast Asia and beyond who caught the series on localized streaming platforms
definitely fell in love. The fact that Netflix will soon be carrying “2gether”
means more people will get to see it.
Stories with same-sex
relationships, particularly boys love, is not entirely new to Philippine audiences,
but the genre has never looked more attractive to watch with good-looking and
great-acting lead stars to carry their show’s storylines. Even the country is
not far behind, having local studio TheIdeaFirst Company developing “Gameboys”
starring Kokoy De Santos and Elijah Canlas, about online gaming rivals who form
a bond while stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the trials and
tribulations of their budding unconventional relationship. This series streams
on YouTube with The IdeaFirst Company’s official page, and runs for ten
episodes in all.
