It was ten years ago. On a
British reality music competition, five strangers competing solo that were
facing elimination from preliminaries were suggested to band together in order
to compete in the show’s Group category. From that emergency origin was born
one of the biggest boy bands in the history of the phrase, and one of the top
international acts from the UK during the early half of the 2010s: One Direction.
After wowing the world for years (and the 2015 departure of a member), they
went on an indefinite hiatus-turned-breakup in 2016. Their official social
media pages went silent and un-updated from 2016/18…until Wednesday.
Entertainment Tonight has it that a long-dormant fandom suddenly
went out of their collective minds on July 22, when the long-silent social
media accounts of long-inactive boy band One Direction suddenly broke the
silence of a few years. The tweet and Instagram post for starters were quite
minimal, with a black background and “10 Years of One Direction” in white text.
The captions went, “Tomorrow! You and me got a whole lot of history
#10YearsOf1D.” That means Thursday, July 23, the day back in 2010 that was
arguably the time when One Direction was formed at “X-Factor” UK series 7.
To say that social media users
who are fans of Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall
Horan went out of their minds with excitement is the understatement of
understatements this month of July. The guys of One Direction have not even
laid out what their plans are for the 10th anniversary of the group,
either on the now-active One Direction social media pages or the individual
members’ own. But the most likely course of action, and one hoped for by the “Directioners,”
is that they will have a reunion, if only for a concert or several.

One needs only look back to the
early half of this decade to appreciate (or not) just how big One Direction was
in the international music industry. Songs like “Best Song Ever,” “Live While
We’re Young” and (naturally) “What Makes You Beautiful” became veritable
ear-worms to listeners everywhere. But when Zayn Malik left the group in 2015,
it signaled the beginning of the members going on the separate projects that
led to the indefinite hiatus – breakup, really – only a year later. But
Directioners never lost hope that they would get back together, eventually. Perhaps
the social media posts are a sign to keep watch over.
