With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing
San Diego Comic-Con to go with virtual streaming for most of its events through
Comic-Con@Home, it feels like a whole different time from the same occasion in
2019. That live iteration of SDCC, which would have been unthinkable these
days, had as one of its highlights the announcement of an upcoming movie for
the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase 4: “Thor: Love and Thunder.” The film
would star Natalie Portman as Avenger Asgardian (ex-) girlfriend Jane Foster,
making up for her post (Dark World) absence by gaining the power of Thor. But
with COVID around, the question becomes when the movie could even start
production.
According to The Daily Mail, Natalie Portman has somewhat put some worries
regarding “Thor: Love and Thunder” to rest when she revealed on social media
when Marvel Studios could begin filming it. Speaking on Instagram Live this
past weekend about her new joint ownership of the “Angel City Football Club”
expansion team for the National Women’s Soccer League, Portman revealed to
Angel City co-owner, tennis superstar Serena Williams, that filming for the
fourth MCU “Thor” movie could start in 2021, ahead of a 2022 release.
“I’m very excited,” the actress,
now aged 39, tells Williams. "We're shooting in Australia at the beginning
of next year." The production tidbit was dropped by Natalie when Serena –
a big MCU fan – asked in between discussion about their NWSL expansion club what
it was like to become Thor on the big screen. Portman has to explain that the
production has not begun yet before telling when it would. She also expressed
relief that work with not begin until the following year, to give herself time
to bulk up (in muscle definition) for her role.
“Obviously everything is weird
because of pandemic time, who knows what’s happening, but the plan is for all
of us to go,” adds Natalie, hinting that she might be able to bring her young
children with her for the shoot.
“Thor: Love and Thunder” is being
helmed by “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017) director, with the general plot based on a “Thor”
story arc in Marvel Comics where the titular God of Thunder becomes unworthy of
his warhammer Mjolnir, leading to Jane Foster using it and assuming the alter
ego of a female Thor, a status quo that takes up to several years of Marvel publication
time. The film also stars Chris Hemsworth as the original Thor, Tessa Thompson,
Christian Bale, and some cast members of “Guardians of the Galaxy.” It has been
slated to premiere in February 2022, the fifth film in the MCU Phase 4.
