“Avengers: Endgame” may have been
the final curtain call for the original members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, at
least as portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise of Disney and
Marvel Studios. But a living, breathing shared setting can theoretically march
on without the heavyweight characters that laid its foundation, as MCU Phase 4
promised with its combined content of cinematic films and streaming series to
debut on the platform of Disney+. One of the shows slated for the latter is “The
Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” but its debut looks to be delayed since the
title is not part of the service’s August timetable.
Comic Book Resources reports that “The Falcon and the Wasp,” one of
the Disney+ originals that will comprise the overall storyline arc for Phase 4
of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was a no-show in the August 2020 release
schedule made public by the streaming platform. Said show, under director Kari
Skogland, jointly stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon and Sebastian Stan
as “Bucky” Barnes/Winter Soldier, both fighting partners of super-soldier
Captain America following the events of “Endgame.” Filming for the show had
started in October of last year, but was halted in March 2020 due to the
COVID-19 global pandemic.
While production by Marvel
Studios was given the go-ahead back in May, it seems the full force of the work
would only continue in July at the Czech Republic following the start of
filming in Atlanta, Georgia. If nothing else this has indeed sunk the earliest estimate
that “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” could premiere in Disney+ by next
month. It would have to be later on in the year. In the meantime, other Marvel
films, be it by Marvel Studios or by 20th Century Fox (now 20th
Century Studios), will be debuting on Disney+ streaming as was scheduled.
Aside from Mackie and Stan, other
returning MCU talent for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” include Emily VanCamp
as (former) SHIELD Agent 13, and Daniel Bruhl as Helmut Zemo, instigator of the
titular “Civil War” in the third Captain America movie. New additions include
Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent, Noah Mills, Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa
and Carl Lumbly.
Included with the Marvel movies,
MCU or otherwise, that will premiere around August on Disney+ are “Ant-Man and
the Wasp” (2018) along with Fox’s “X-Men” (2000) and “Fantastic Four” (2005).
