Even as cinemas in North America
mull over the question of whether to reopen now or later, film studios are
repeatedly rescheduling the releases of their respective movies, many of which
had original premiere dates during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
United Artists and Orion Pictures are doing likewise for their long-awaited
sequel “Bill & Ted Face the Music” with Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves. Originally
(and symbolically) set for August 21, 2020, the ravages of the outbreak caused
the release to be pushed forward, then back. The new premiere date was revealed
with the release of a new trailer just this Thursday.
As Comic Book Resources tells it, a second trailer for “Bill & Ted
Face the Music” came out on July 23. It goes to shed even more light on the
general overview of the plot already shared a long time before by its lead
stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. The first trailer that came out in June
stressed that the now-middle-aged Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Winter) and Ted “Theodore”
Logan (Reeves) have not yet created the one song of their Wyld Stallyns rock
band that would lead to the creation of the utopian future they glimpsed in the
original 1989 film. This follow-up emphasizes the consequences for being late.
Aside from the drudgery of
growing old, Bill and Ted seem to be falling out of love with their
medieval-princess wives (Jayma Mays and Erinn Hayes). Thankfully their
daughters Thea (Samara Weaving) and Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine) not only get
along with their dads but are rather like chips off the old block too. So when
they see their old men travel to the future to confront the crisis stemming
from their not having written The Song yet, the Little Bill and Ted take the
time-machine phone booth on a journey of their own to help.
The trailer for “Face the Music”
then follows two parallel plot-lines with the elder Wyld Stallyns trying to get
The Song by “stealing” it from their future selves, reuniting with old friends
like Death and Station. Thea and Billie in turn travel to various time periods
to recruit musicians for their dad’s band. The result is time-travel hijinks
galore with prime tributes to the first two films, but will their combined efforts
be enough to save the universe from destruction?
Overblown blurb aside, the film
is directed by Dean Parisot and also stars Kristen Schaal, Jillian Bell, Beck
Bennett and Kid Cudi. “Bill & Ted Face the Music” premieres in cinemas on
September 1 barring an escalation on the COVID crisis. This is also
simultaneous with a digital home release on OnDemand video-on-demand and
pay-per-view.
