Production started last month on
the third installment of Universal Pictures’ “Jurassic World,” the lear-distant
sequel to the original 1990s “Jurassic Park” trilogy which was started by
Steven Spielberg. When director Colin Trevorrow teased the start of photography
for the movie in February with a photo of a clapper with the film title (and
subtitle, in full “Jurassic World: Dominion”), sharp eyes might have noticed
that the logo font did not use the “World” style from 2015, but the font of the
“Park” movies from decades ago. That throwaway detail was significant after
all, following the release of the first teaser poster for “Jurassic World:
Dominion.”
As Screen Rant tells it, Universal Pictures just introduced the first
teaser poster for “Jurassic World: Dominion,” third of the “Jurassic World”
movies and sixth overall in the entire “Jurassic Park” film series from the 1993
original. Not only is it minimalistic – the title on a black background – it was
also a cool throwback to the first three movies but most especially the
original. Rather than the metallic 3D design of the 2015 “Jurassic World” logo,
the “Dominion” version uses the “Jurassic Park” 2D font-style, as originating
from the cover design of the original source novel by Michael Crichton.
The same goes for the T-Rex skeleton
logo; the “World” version looks like it was a fossil hewn from rock, again due
to the 3D effect. But for the third movie “Dominion” it also reverted to the era
of the “Park” trilogy, with a black skeleton silhouette against a red
background as plastered on the vehicles of the late John Hammond’s (Richard
Attenborough’s) original park vehicles. The design decision seems to put “Dominion”
in the same position as “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” in becoming a
climactic, even conclusive, chapter of the film franchise.
Such an assumption may not be far
from the truth, if one considers the status of the franchise setting from the
2017 film “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” A series of incidents starting from
the Jurassic Park/World island site being devastated by a volcanic eruption has
led to many cloned dinosaurs escaping from captivity and making homes for
themselves in environments where man with easily encounter them, leading to the
birth of a “true” Jurassic World. The “Dominion” subtitle of the upcoming film
can imply a final struggle between men and dinosaurs in either finding a
balanced co-existence, or the extinction of either or both sides.
“Jurassic World: Dominion”
combines “World” lead stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard with the
original “Park” leads Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, under the
direction of Colin Trevorrow. Universal Pictures expects to release the movie
June 2021.
