TONY HAWK Mistaken for Celebrity Singer in His Elimination from “THE MASKED SINGER” Season 3

One of the best elements of “The Masked Singer” on Fox is the variable level of challenge in trying to determine the identity of the costume celebrity contestants singing their hearts out on stage. Even with the mandatory talking segments where the competitors drop hints both verbal and material for the panel and audience to pick up on, the possibility of guessing right is never consistent easy nor difficult. On the third week of the show, the deduction turned out to be a bit harder than usual, with none of the regular panelists ever getting right who was under the mask of the eliminated singer.

Variety tells us that it was almost an enigma, guessing-wise, what went down on week 3 of “The Masked Singer” on its third season at Fox. Airing Wednesday, February 19, the six contestants who went under the spotlight were all on their first attempt at singing incognito (for the most part). Frog led off with MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This;” Elephant went with “Friday I’m in Love” by The Cure; Kitty sang Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman;” Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” for Taco; Mouse in turn performed Oleta Adams’ “Get Here;” and the last number was Banana channeling Elvis with “A Little Less Conversation.”

Despite a fairly even opinion on song quality for all performers, the panel of Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger focused on Elephant as the weakest link. The thing is, they could not float a decisive deduction on his identity. Thicke ultimately came close with his generalization that Elephant was an extreme sports athlete, which was proven when he took off the mask and revealed himself as retired skateboarding icon Tony Hawk. The others however believed he was a recording artist, something Hawk feels quite happy about.

Post-reveal, Hawk noted that the difficulty in guessing his identity and the assumption he was an actual masked “singer” made him confident about his vocal talent, considering he says that there are musicians in his family history. Furthermore, two of the first three masked singers eliminated in the past three episodes were indeed artists. Lil Wayne was under the Robot costume in the February 2 premiere, and Miss Monster was revealed as veteran singer Chaka Khan in February 12. If actual singers were easily booted from “The Masked Singer,” says Hawk, he does not feel bad for being eliminated fourth.

Only six anonymous contestants have yet to sing on season 3 of “The Masked Singer,” Wednesdays (barring the season premiere on a Sunday) on Fox.
