This past weekend, South Korean boy
band sensation BTS asserted their global K-Pop fan domination anew with the
release of their seventh studio album. “Map of the Soul: 7” (seventh album
overall but only fourth in Korean) has been promoted to absolute levels ever
since it was first announced last month, with its first single “Black Swan”
debuting on January 17. Said song got plenty exposure for its album and itself
thanks to a companion “art film” and a performance of it by the group on James
Corden’s “Late Late Show.” There was no doubt then that the BTS Army would come
buying in force.
The Manila Bulletin has it that following its official release on
Friday, February 21, the BTS album “Map of the Soul: 7” has been selling like
hotcakes. Sales have been so good in fact that about 2 million copies were
snapped up by customers in the first day alone. The Hanteo music chart of South
Korea kept track of sales figures for the BTS album and stated that “Map of the
Soul: 7” sold no less than 2.65 million for February 21, with 385,005 of those
copies being bought by the BTS army and other collectors in the first eight minutes
since going on sale.
With the runaway success of “Map
of the Soul: 7” BTS has just achieved several milestones for their music
career. With the over 2-million first day copy sales they have trumped their
own first-day selling record from 2019, which was when their “Map of the Soul:
Persona” extended play (EP) sold 1.47 million on its April 12 release day. With
that, BTS is now the record-holding artist that has sold more than a million
copies of an album in the shortest period of time, according to Hanteo’s
readings of the local Korean market and international online commercial platforms
like Amazon.
Speaking of Amazon, the
marketplace giant now places BTS’ latest full studio album on its Best Sellers
in CD and Vinyl, at Rank 1 quite obviously. Another global brand giving the big
number one for “Map of the Soul: 7” is Apple iTunes. For now it is taking the
lead on the Top Albums charts prepared by Amazon, canvassed from 91 countries
around the world. That should certainly put the boys in the best mood yet for
when they return again to James Corden’s show this Tuesday night, February 25,
for some “Carpool Karaoke” madness.
