While in the Philippines, the “doble-kara”
or ability to sing male and female parts alternately in a duet song by
versatile vocalists has been a familiar stunt in singing contests throughout
the country, overseas the talent is seen as an exotic novelty. And when it is
demonstrated by a truly gifted falsetto performer like Marcelito Pomoy, it is
more than enough to make him a viral sensation anew and push him even further
in his campaign to win NBC’s “America’s Got Talent: The Champions” season 2.
The 2011 grand champion of “Pilipinas Got Talent” season 2 has only performed
for the current competition twice. But he is now a finalist.
According to ABS-CBN News, Marcelito Pomoy is now assured a spot in the finals
of the second season of the special “America’s Got Talent: The Champions”
edition this year. The semifinals phase started this Monday, February 3 on NBC
with 12 hopefuls, all veterans of their local “Got Talent” competitions in
years past, including Pomoy. He had already wowed Simon Cowell, his fellow
judges and the audience by singing “The Prayer” as interpreted by Celine Dion
and Andrea Bocelli. Now for his semi-final piece Marcelito dips into the blind
Italian Tenor’s well one more time.
This time, Pomoy sung Bocelli’s partly-English
version of the Italian song “Con Te Partiro,” or “Time to Say Goodbye.” Again,
this was a duet performance pairing Andrea with English Soprano Sarah
Brightman, and Marcelito proved his dual-voice falsetto chops that won him the
second “Pilipinas Got Talent” tilt were consistent and capable of giving even
more. Judges and audience members again gave him a standing ovation both during
and after.
Post-performance, the panel was
again singing Marcelito Pomoy’s praises, with all of them voicing their strong
opinions that the Filipino dual-voice was strongly positioned to win “America’s
Got Talent: The Champions” season 2. Simon Cowell did advise Pomoy to give all out
and take risks for his next performance, possibly at the finals itself, because
with two crowning numbers the “freshness” of his dual-voices could be fading. Again,
with the 50-state Superfans behind him, Marcelito was assured his finals berth.
“AGT: The Champions” on NBC still
has one semi-finals episode next week, February 11, before the finale episode
kicks off in two weeks, February 18.
