Friday last week was Valentine’s
Day, in case anyone forgot. And because it was, February 14 was a prime time to
showcase some showbiz romance, especially from the most memorable pairings in
the industry. One could look no further in that regard than in John Lloyd Cruz
and Bea Alonzo, despite the former making himself scarce from work for so long.
But their dynamics have been so memorable that they were able to drive their
fandom to gleeful distraction by doing a script reading of a film from years
ago. Their listeners loved it even though the movie they read from was not even
theirs.
CNN Philippines has it that John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo briefly
got together for a Valentine’s project that their fans ate up with gusto. They were
part of the Art Fair Philippines outdoor film screening event in Makati last
February 14, where they read the script of the 2014 Star Cinema film “That
Thing Called Tadhana.” This is notable because they did not star in the movie;
JM de Guzman and Angelica Panganiban did. But when Lloydy read JM’s lines as
his character Anthony, and Bea read Angelica’s as Mace, it was like they made
the characters their own.
Fans of Cruz and Alonzo packed
Ayala Triangle to see their idols as they vocalized key scenes from “That Thing
Called Tadhana,” accompanied by the movie director Antoinette Jadaone as
narrator. While John Lloyd is already due to break his showbiz hiatus soon in
the upcoming film “Servando Magdamag,” his showing up in a film screening as part
of the festivities, with his most iconic showbiz partner – as solidified by
productions like “One More Chance” in 2007 – will certainly help to remind the
fandom that he is still a heartthrob star to be reckoned with.
While the script reading by John
Lloyd and Bea might have only been a one-time special due to Valentine’s Day,
the Art Fair Philippines outdoor screening showed popular Filipino romance
films all through the weekend. As for Cruz, his movie “Servando Magdamag” is
co-directed by Lav Diaz and Ricky Lee, but no release date have been given for
it yet.
