Casual fans may know Steven
Spielberg as a legendary filmmaker with plenty of hits to his name as either
director or producer, but he is also a big name in terms of creating memorable
television programming via his Amblin Entertainment. They might range from
quirky animated series such as “Tiny Toon Adventures,” “Animaniacs” and
“Freakazoid!,” to the 1980s anothology “Amazing Stories” which ran for two
seasons on NBC and even won several Primetime Emmy Awards during its run.
Barring a spinoff series based on one anthology episode that aired in the
1990s, nothing has been heard of “Amazing Stories” since its origin decade,
until now.
According to Comic Book Resources, Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories”
anthology is now set to return this year in a big way, and on a new home. Said
home is Apple TV+, which has been working on conceptualizing the rebooted show
since 2017, after NBC tried and failed to revive the series themselves way back
in 2015. Now a return of “Amazing Stories” would not really be so without Spielberg
in so, so he is in the production as an executive producer alongside Adam
Horowitz and his “Once Upon a Time” co-creator Edward Kitsis, who was also of
the production posse for “Lost,” both ABC hits.
This reboot for “Amazing Stories”
will start off with five anthology episodes, as showcased on the trailer. While
the snippets shown are sort of out of context, they do hint at the classic “Amazing
Stories” stomping grounds such as unusual atmospheric phenomenon, space aliens,
time travel, and people gaining amazing abilities. The last one is especially
poignant casting-wise, because the grandpa with superhero powers seen in the teaser
is played by the late Robert Forster (Ed Galbraith in “Breaking Bad,” “El
Camino” and “Better Call Saul”), who died October 2019.
While it is too bad that
Spielberg could not personally contribute to the episodes of this new “Amazing
Stories” anthology, the way he wrote and directed several episodes of the
original NBC series, it is still great that he could have a hand in bringing
this memorable program back for a new generation. Other stars to watch out for
in the titular stories include, Edward Burns, Austin Stowell, Kerry Bishé,
Robert Forster, Dylan O'Brien, Victoria Pedretti, Josh Holloway, and Sasha
Alexander. The series premieres on Apple TV+ streaming this March 6, and it will
be one of many new upcoming content for that online platform.
