Slow and steady wins the race, as
the old saying goes; and despite the delays in getting principal photography
started it looks like ABS-CBN’s latest big-screen adaptation of iconic Filipina
super-heroine “Darna” continues to chug along to completion. Director Jerrold
Tarog got the ball rolling for production last month, and lead star Jane de
Leon has already been getting in shape for her role even earlier than that.
What is notable, however, is that de Leon has been the only major member of the
upcoming “Darna” movie cast identified by name. Or that was the case until just
last week.
ABS-CBN News reports that a new name has been added to the
principal cast of ABS-CBN’s “Darna” movie. Joining Jane de Leon is actor Paulo
Avelino, whose participation in the project was announced on social media by
his manager, Leo V. Dominguez. Even then however, this development was
bare-bones in details, with Dominguez only stating Avelino’s casting without
specifying what role he is going to play. There is the possibility of him being
the leading man for Jane, or if major enough, the main antagonist. At least he
will have great dynamics with director Jerrold Tarog, having played Gregorio
del Pilar in the latter’s Artikulo Uno historical epics “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo:
Ang Batang Heneral.”
Shooting for “Darna” began in
earnest on January 20 this year, announced by Tarog several times on his
Instagram account by photos of a Darna vinyl figurine from American
manufacturer Funko. The filmmaker was a replacement for original director Erik
Matti, who conceptualized the “Darna” revival with ABS-CBN/Star Cinema only to
leave following creative differences between him and the studio. Paulo himself
will be quite busy this year, as the filming schedule for “Darna” falls alongside
his own commitment to “Burado,” another upcoming ABS-CBN tele-serye.
While Jane de Leon and Paulo
Avelino remain the only stars listed in the cast of Star Cinema and Jerrold
Tarog’s take on Mars Ravelo’s “Darna,” at least Avelino has more known co-cast
members for “Burado,” such as actor Denkhun Ngamnet from Thailand, Zanjoe
Marudo and Julia Montes, who herself is taking the lead in another action soap,
“24/7” which will premiere this February 23.
