Streaming giant Netflix seems to
have this lucky flair of adapting some media into short but sweet online
series. Some of these properties are from Japan, and from forms of original
media not expected to make for good miniseries storytelling. But “Castlevania,”
based on the long-running multi-platform videogame by Konami, was a surprise binge-watching
hit. In two short seasons it transformed the minimal plot of a NES-era “Castlevania”
game into a supernatural horror action animated spectacle. But even with
franchise villain Count Dracula seemingly killed at the end of the second
season, the storyline has not been finished. Fortunately it could well be
continuing soon.
IGN tells us that Netflix has finally put a concrete date for when
the green-lighted third season to their anime-style “Castlevania” series will
be made available for streaming. On Twitter, the Netflix upcoming page tweeted
that season 3 will premiere on their platform next month. It also comes with a
spiffy new promotion poster, boasting some spanking new character designs for
the cast of characters that survived the first two seasons, plus one new
addition. Netflix promises in the caption that there will be more mystery,
murder, mayhem and vampires in series than ever before.
In a way, this new announcement
makes true an earlier Twitter post on Netflix Nordic about “Castlevania” season
3 arriving early in 2020. The tweet was quickly deleted and it was assumed that
it was made in error. It turns out it was an error, in that Netflix Nordic
inadvertently spoiled the surprise. That said, another surprise is the new “dressed-down”
fashion sported by the main characters in the promo poster, without any heavier
accessories like fur cloaks and robes. The earlier seasons took place primarily
over wintertime after all.

“Castlevania” sees the voice reprisal
of main cast Richard Armitage as vampire hunter Tervor Belmont, Alejandra
Reynoso as Sypha Belnades, and James Callis as Alucard, son of Dracula. With
the vampire lord played by Graham McTavish already dead, the role of main
undead foe falls to Carmilla (Jaime Murray) who has enslaved the devil
forge-master Hector (Theo James), while his contemporary Isaac (Adetokumboh
M'Cormac) remains loyal to Dracula’s memory. A new unnamed character is prominently
featured, with speculation that it is Rinaldo Gandolfi, an alchemist from the 2003
PlayStation 2 videogame “Castlevania: Lament of Innocence.” “Castlevania”
season 3 arrives for streaming on Netflix March 5.
