Suffice to say that Catriona
Gray, the fourth Filipina beauty queen to be crowned Miss Universe only three
years after the third, has a powerful presence with the Filipino people. Even
though her duties to the pageant organization took her away from her home
country a lot, people have always been filled with fascination for her. On
December last year, days before she passed on the crown to South Africa’s
Zozibini Tunzi, a song was uploaded on YouTube that sang Catriona’s praises in
English and Tagalog rap. The performer, who uses the stage name Matthaios, has
in real life also longed to meet Miss Universe 2018. His wish was granted.
According to ABS-CBN News, rapper Matthaios realized the lyrics of his viral hit
song “Catriona” when he finally met, in person, the woman who had inspired him
this week. The meeting between Matthaios and former Miss Universe titleholder
Catriona Gray happened this Thursday, January 9, an occasion he memorialized
with a photo of the two of them on his Instagram. His caption paraphrased a
line from his single: “Heaven really does exist.” And next to him was Catriona
with the smile which, according to his rap: “gives me chills, makes me blush,
gives me worth.”
“Catriona” by Matthaios, a rapper
under MIDA$ Records, was released on YouTube back in December 1. With the Miss Universe
2019 in Atlanta only seven days away, when Catriona would give up her crown to
the new titleholder, his song made for a simple yet catchy and appropriate
callback to Gray’s triumph in the 2018 pageant held in Thailand. As proof of
its viral marketability, “Catriona” the song would go on to earn more than 28
million views and close to 300,000 likes. It even managed to get official dance
steps that have become the latest trending in the country.
It is no surprise also that
ABS-CBN would catch on to the “Catriona” craze and have Matthaios’ song be
featured in a dance number on “ASAP Natin ‘To” this past Sunday, January 5. And
it was simply appropriate that after completing her Miss Universe duties,
Catriona Gray in the flesh would go on and join the Kapamilya Channel, where
she is now a new host for weekday noontime show “It’s Showtime."
Matthaios also has an official music video for his now-hit song on YouTube. This new video has a foreword
encouraging fans of the song (particularly the female ones) that there will
come a time when somebody arrives who will treat them as the Miss Universe of
their lives. In short, “Everyone is a Catriona.”
