After December 18 the year before,
it looks like FOX is now two for two in terms of quality output from their
reality singing competition with a twist, “The Masked Singer.” The show
premiered in January last year and ended the following month. It was
green-lighted for season renewal, with a second season featuring more
contestants aired September 2019 to December. Again the program was renewed.
Even better, it will be starting even earlier this year due to a very short season
break. And very soon it will be time to guess who is packing the vocal chords
underneath the elaborate costumes and giant masks.
Entertainment Tonight tells us that season 3 of “The Masked Singer”
will be ready to perform next month, right on the heels of Super Bowl LIV this
coming Sunday, February 2. In terms of show regulars, host Nick Cannon and the
four-person panel of Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Robin Thicke and Nicole
Scherzinger are all headed back to the saddle to judge and ascertain the
identities of the again-expanded pool of eponymous Masked Singers. This time
there will be 18 of them, two more than in season 2 which was four more than
season 1.
In what is now being established
as “Masked Singer” tradition, the production is again providing a list of
combined statistics to serve as a foundation on determining who the contestants
are likely to be. For season 3 the Masked Singers have a total of 69 Grammy
nominations, 88 gold records, 11 Super Bowl appearances, 3 stars on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame, one Guinness World Record, and too many tattoos to
count. And the costuming department has gone to town, as made obvious by the aliases:
Llama, Banana, Frog, Mouse, Robot, Kangaroo, Turtle, Astronaut, Kitty, Taco,
Swan, Rhino, Bear, White Tiger and Miss Monster. One costume has not been
revealed.
Season 3 of “The Masked Singer”
will also change the competition format by introducing a tournament-style
knockout. The 18 will be divided into three groups of six singers. Three
singers will each advance from Groups A, B and C, where they will be unified
into one last group for a more traditional contest format as with previous
seasons. One singer will generally be unmasked every episode, and clue packages
are still there, but expanded with appearances from the singers’ relatives
(also masked with distorted voices), to drop more telling hints.
Guest panelists for this season
include Jamie Foxx, Jamie Biggs and Leah Remini for the first three episodes,
with more to be revealed later on. “The Masked Singer” will make for awesome
follow-up to FOX’s coverage of Super Bowl LIV.
