When it comes to television
programming in America, it can be a dog-eat-dog world to find a place for a
show particularly in the choice primetime slots. If a series does not catch
enough viewers’ attentions in ratings then they stand a chance of being cancelled.
But if the audience does take to a show then it could become a memorable
long-runner. The CW has quite one of the biggest selection of primetime series
around, and evening lineups between seasons can change as programs come and go.
But for this year, the entire CW block seems to be in the clear for one more
season.
The Hollywood Reporter tells us that The CW has gone and renewed
all of their ongoing series for additional seasons this 2020. That amounts to
about 13 individual shows that will have one more season’s worth of episodes to
tell their respective stories. The only exceptions to this blanket renewal are
those programs whose currently airing seasons have already been announced last
year to be their last ones. That includes the pioneering show of the “Arrow”
universe of DC superhero TV. In that respect, The CW is keeping its lineup intact
save for the concluders.
By order of their total season
numbers, the shows being renewed by The CW are the following: debut shows “Nancy
Drew” and “Arrow-verse” tie-in “Batwoman” will get their second season; “In the
Dark,” “All American,” “Legacies,” and the remakes of “Charmed” and “Roswell,
New Mexico” go to their third; non-“Arrow-verse” DC program “Black Lightning” and
the “Dynasty” remake will have four; “Riverdale” and “Supergirl” get their
fifth (or for the latter, sixth since it debuted on CBS); “Legends of Tomorrow”
adds a season 6; and finally the longest runner of the lot “The Flash” will go
for its seventh stretch.
In a statement Tuesday, August 7,
The CW president Mark Pedowitz noted that the early announcement of renewals
for their shows is beneficial to these programs’ creative and production teams,
so they can start plotting another season’s worth of story developments for
their in-series narratives early. He adds, "We've been thrilled with the
creative direction of all three new series, and even though we are in the very
early stages of our new full stack streaming strategy, which allows viewers to
catch up on our new shows from the beginning, we’re already seeing incredibly
positive results from our multiplatform viewership for ‘Nancy Drew’ and ‘Batwoman’.”
Aside from the renewing series,
another show will be premiering on The CW this February. “Katy Keene” is a
spinoff of “Riverdale,” and has already been ordered scripts for an additional
13 episodes to its debut season, a sure sign that it too could see its own
season renewal eventually. “Arrow” is joined by “Supernatural” and “The 100” in
the list of CW programs on their concluding seasons at present.
