One of the biggest moments during
the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards last Sunday evening had been the
surprise victory of “Parasite,” the increasingly news-making South Korean film
by Bong Joon-ho. It had won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in
a Motion Picture, and this accolade can only surely bode well for its chances
in converting its several nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards
into actual Oscar statuettes. But this amazing victory should not overshadow
the other awardees last January 19. Some of those names are expected winners while
others, like “Parasite,” were pleasant surprises as well.
The Hollywood Reporter has a rundown on the other best films and
television series of 2019 that were given their dues at the recent Screen
Actors Guild Awards. For the motion picture scene, there is already a major
buzz regarding “Parasite” and their being awarded Outstanding Performance by a
Cast, especially as it already has multiple nominations for the upcoming Oscars
next month. But the other awardees were no slouches either. Joaquin Phoenix won
Outstanding Actor – Drama for bringing Batman villain “Joker” to life. Renee
Zellweger matched that in her Outstanding Female Actor win for playing Judy
Garland in “Judy.”
Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a
Time in Hollywood” also got a nod thanks to Brad Pitt winning Outstanding Actor
in a Supporting Role, with his opposite number being Laura Dern as supporting
actress for the memetic Netflix drama “Marriage Story.”
On the television categories, “Fosse/Verdon”
on FX swept the Outstanding Male and Female Actors for TV Movie/Miniseries courtesy
of Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams. On the drama front, the Actor trophies
went to Peter Dinklage as one of the last few awards owed to HBO’s now-ended “Game
of Thrones,” and Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”). “The Crown” is yet
another Netflix triumph for winning the Outstanding Performance by Ensemble –
Drama.
Tony Shalhoub on “The Marvelous
Mrs. Maisel” proves his comedy chops anew by taking the Outstanding Performance
by an Actor for Comedy, which goes just as well with the Outstanding Ensemble –
Comedy Series win for the Amazon Prime series itself. Phoebe Waller-Bridges
takes one back to the UK (Outstanding Performance by Female Actor – Comedy) for
her leading role in BBC’s “Fleabag.” Finally, the stunt ensembles of big and
small screens were honored for their hard and potentially dangerous work with “Avengers:
Endgame” for film, and “Game of Thrones” for TV.
In terms of nomination numbers it
seems the streaming platforms have their moments thanks to having original
films and series on top of the list. Lastly, Robert de Niro of “The Irishman”
was accorded the Life Achievement Award for 2019.
