While not always a guaranteed
course of action for many, it has happened often enough that contestants of a
localized edition for a global reality talent competition will eventually try
their luck in the more international versions of the show, especially if they
were winners or champions in their corners. In 2011 the second season of “Pilipinas
Got Talent” on ABS-CBN voted as grand champion Marcelito Pomoy, whose specialty
was to do “solo duets” with his incredible falsetto vocal range of male tenor
and female-sounding soprano, sung alternately. He just auditioned in season 2
of “America’s Got Talent: The Champions” on NBC, and amazingly advanced to the
semi-finals from preliminaries.
The Philippine Star reports that season 2 of “America’s Got Talent:
The Champions,” which premiered on NBC this past January 6, just had its first
contestant from the Philippine edition of the “Got Talent” global franchise by
Simon Cowell. That would be Marcelito Pomoy, champion of “PGT” season 2 back in
2011, and he is back with more of his “doble-kara”
falsetto singing style where he does both male and female parts in a duet. His
audition piece in the Preliminaries 2 episode last Monday, January 13, so
impressed judges and audience that he was immediately advanced to the
semi-finals.
Pomoy’s introduction to the “AGT:TC”
panel of judges, including Simon, was a heartwarming feature on how much the
singer’s fortunes have changed ever since his winning “Pilipinas Got Talent”
campaign. From a technical orphan with an imprisoned father and a mother that
abandoned him and his sibling, Marcelito’s uncommon singing talent let him earn
his keep in amateur and professional competitions before joining “PGT.” During his
time there, Pomoy was eventually reunited with his parents, both of which have
started their own families. Post-contest, he also married and had a daughter,
and his wife accompanied him to “AGT:TC” for support.
Marcelito Pomoy’s audition piece
for “America’s Got Talent: The Champions” was his signature doble-kara song, “The Prayer” as
interpreted by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. The moment the judges and
audience realized what feat he was pulling, a standing ovation was given to
Marcelito during his number. The judges’ panel of Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon,
Howie Mandel and Heidi Klum were certainly impressed, and while they felt the
need to hold on to their Golden Buzzer votes, they were confident that the new “Superfans”
feature of the competition will push him to the Semis. And indeed, the extra
panel of Superfans representing the 50 US states voted for Pomoy’s advancement.
The “AGT: The Champions” spinoff
edition brings together contestants and winners from other “Got Talent”
competitions around the world for a true Battle Royale to be voted “World
Champion” of the franchise. Aside from his recording career, Marcelito is also
a regular performer/host on “ASAP.”
