Television-wise, the epic
medieval fantasy story about the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros ended already on
the HBO series “Game of Thrones” last year, even if the source novels written
by George R.R. Martin, “A Song of Ice and Fire,” have not actually reached
their conclusion. Fans might blame Martin spending time writing spinoff
prequels to the setting such as the novelettes about “Dunk and Egg” (Sir Duncan
the Tall and the future King Aegon V), and the history of House Targaryen which
united Westeros under the Iron Throne. The latter is being developed into a new
HBO series, but the wait will be rather long.
The Verge tells us that HBO has ordered straight to series a new
show based on the World of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. “House of the
Dragon” will be a distant prequel to the 2011-19 “Game of Thrones” series that
introduced Westeros to the mainstream TV audience. Taking place around three
centuries before the beginning of “Thrones,” the new show will chronicle the
history of the dragon-riding Targaryen Family that founded the Iron Throne
monarchy. Speaking of distant, while development of the series has begun, it
will not premiere until about 2022.
Such was the estimated release timetable
given by HBO president for programming Casey Bloys, who also remarked that this
was the “Game of Thrones” spinoff – out of several proposed – that the cable
network will concentrate work on. “Sometime down the road who knows, but there
are no immediate plans,” says Bloys. “We are all focusing on ‘House of the
Dragon’.” This series, like “Thrones” before it, will be based on one of Martin’s
side-story books, “Fire and Blood,” of which the first part was published in
November of last year.
George R.R. Martin had planned
his anthology of stories about the Targaryen Dynasty to come out in two parts.
There is no concrete plan on what “House of the Dragon” will cover in its
planned 10 episodes, though it will likely cover key events in Westerosi
history such as the initial conquest of the continent by Aegon I and his
sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, and the Targaryen Civil War that was the
Dance of the Dragons which cost the ruling house its fire-breathing mounts
which intimidated the land into submission. All these incidents would lead to
the weakening of the Targaryens until deposed in Robert’s Rebellion, years
before the events of “Game of Thrones” occur.
“House of the Dragon” will be
developed by show-runners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal. They will also
serve as executive producers alongside George R.R. Martin and Vince Geradis.
With its premiere not until 2022, no casting news has been shared.
