It is an understatement to say
that the recent eruption of Taal Volcano in Batangas, which started in earnest
on Sunday of this week, has been a great source of grief for residents in that
part of Region IVB – Calabarzon. People living in the immediate area surrounding
Taal Lake, as well as the brave settlers on the permanent-danger-zone volcanic
island, have been itching to return home following evacuation. Falling ash have
blanketed communities, roadways and farms, as well as run the risk of medical
conditions. Travel particularly by air has also been affected. The nearby area
and the country as well sorely needed some comfort.
And as ABS-CBN News puts it, some smiles for the Taal evacuees might be on
the way courtesy of a three-year-old song from Sarah Geronimo that will be the
centerpiece of a flash mob for charity. “Tala Para sa Taal” is the brainchild
of Sarah G Facebook-based fan club “Popsters Official,” and will be held this
coming weekend at the Quirino Grandstand. For a P100 per-head registration fee
and a pink-colored shirt, participants can take part in a large-scale dance mob
for the benefit of Taal evacuees, with the entirety of their fees being donated
to the Philippine Red Cross.
According to the flash mob event organizer Barrie Juanico, who is also the webmaster of Popsters Official’s FB page, their expected number of participants at minimum is at 300, which would guarantee a Red Cross donation of P30,000 for the displaced residents of the area around Taal Volcano. The Sarah G fan club is confident at the turnout numbers considering that the song to be used, released by the OPM idol back in 2016, has had a resurgence since last year as a viral hit for its danceable rhythm and accompanying choreography that has been obsessively copied by Geronimo’s fans.
“Tala” was part of Sarah Geronimo’s
“The Great Unknown” album, and was co-written by Nic del Rosario and Emmanuel
Sambayan. Its official music video helped cement the Kapamilya star’s
reputation as a dance diva, thanks to choreography from Georcelle Dapat-Sy. Three
years following its debut, “Tala” returned to the spotlight due to being the
subject of an online dance challenge, not to mention having been parodied by
Anne Curtis as part of a commercial for Jollibee (“Linamnam, Ulam”). Come 2020
the “Tala” YouTube video stood at over 25 million views.
As of Wednesday, no less than
39,000 residents of Batangas communities around Taal Lake have been displaced
away from the extended danger zone. It is forecast that despite the slowing
down of activity, the chances of a powerful explosive eruption from the volcano
still remains. “Tala Para sa Taal” will be done at the Quirino Grandstand on
Saturday, January 18.
