Singing reality shows are a dime
a dozen on world TV by now, but there are particular programs produced on various
local networks that tend to get promoted as one of their respective home
country’s top singing contests. In China, one such reality show would be Hunan
Television’s “Wǒ Shì Gēshǒu,” or “I Am a Singer,” which became a topic of
discussion in the Philippines when singer-rapper KZ Tandingan competed in
season 6 (2018), which was won by her idol-inspiration Jessie J from the UK. Since
then, it has become speculation on when another Filipino could impress on “I Am
a Singer,” soon to premiere its season 8 starting March.
This Tuesday according to The Manila Bulletin, a certain
Filipino-Canadian teen singing sensation may have teased that he could be
showing up on the next “I Am a Singer” season on Hunan Television. ABS-CBN Star
Magic talent Darren Espanto caught social media off guard when he posted on his
Instagram page this past January 21 an image of the “I Am a Singer” promotional
poster from Hunan TV with the caption: “Dare to Sing. #Singer2020”
But just a few hours after
posting it, Darren quietly removed the post from his account. But on the short
time it was on, the comments section was flooded with messages of
congratulations from fans. Apparently they perceived the Instagram entry as
Espanto announcing that he would be a contestant on “Singer” season 8. And it
is not even the first time he appeared on the show. Last year in their season 7
he was a featured guest performer on the Finals Round 1. Darren, along with
Chinese rapper Air and child singer Daneliya Tuleshova from Kazakhstan,
performed with Russian contestant Polina Gagarina and her partner David for a
rendition of “We Are the World.”
Since deleting the Instagram post
with the “I Am a Singer” promo image, Darren Espanto has been silent on the matter.
Was it a tease about being a contestant? Was it a mistake? Maybe it was a joke?
There has been no further info since.
