For numerous decades, actually
over a century, the London wax museum of Madame Tussaud’s and the subsequent
company that operated it and all subsequent branches around the world have been
thrilling and attracting the attention and curiosity of a wide range of
visitors. But in all that time, and among the many historical figures and international
celebrities that have had Tussauds wax figures made of them, only a handful of
Filipino personalities have lucked out. First had been boxing legend Manny Pacquiao;
next was Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach. Now, another beauty queen has been
honored with a wax replica.
The Philippine Star reports that Miss Universe 2017 Catriona Gray
has been honored with her own figure of wax courtesy of Madame Tussauds.
Whereas the figure of her fellow beauty Queen Pia Wurtzbach is housed in the
Tussauds Hong Kong museum, the one for Gray will be exhibited in Singapore.
Tussauds Singapore made the formal announcement of their commissioning the
figure on a post this Monday, January 6, on the occasion of Catriona’s 25th
birthday. The tweet accompanied a photo of the beauty queen in a red gown,
sorting through a set of artificial eyes in a Tussauds plastic case, presumably
to have them installed in her upcoming wax figure.

On this special day of hers, we have a special announcement to make! Her image will be immortalised in Madame Tussauds and unveiling will take place in her home country and her figure will be touring to Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong respectively pic.twitter.com/E4uoeQM9oz
But while Tussauds Singapore will
work on and become the permanent home of Gray’s wax figure, it was deemed
appropriate that the artwork should be unveiled in the Philippines. Catriona
was excited at the prospect, as noted on another official statement from the
museum. “Her image will be immortalised in Madame Tussauds and unveiling will
take place in her home country and her figure will be touring to Singapore,
Bangkok and Hong Kong respectively,” remarked Tussauds Singapore on their tweet.
The figure will be clad in a copy of her red “lava gown” by Mak Tumang, which
she wore when she was crowned December 2018.
“We are constantly bringing in
more fun to cater to various markets, and we look forward to welcome Catriona
who will be the first Filipino wax figure in Madame Tussauds Singapore,” noted
Tussauds Singapore museum general manager Alex Ward. He also hinted that the
2018 Miss Universe title-holder also participated in the filming of a museum
special, though he provided no further details. Catriona Gray, the third fourth
Filipina to win Miss Universe, relinquished her title December 2019 in Atlanta
when she crowned her successor, Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi.
