This weekend, the three-trilogy
long saga of a family strong in the Force from a long time ago in a Galaxy Far,
Far Away, will come to an end with a ninth episodic movie ever since the
franchise began in 1977. We are of course talking about Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars:
The Rise of Skywalker,” the purported swan song of the legend of the titular Force-sensitive
family that saw two Jedi Knights (one of whom fell to the Dark Side), a Rebel
leader and politician, another corrupted apprentice and a mysterious
Force-wielding orphan. But apparently there will be more familiar faces to see
in this film than the Skywalkers and friends.
Comic Book Resources tells us that “Star Wars: The Rise of
Skywalker” director J.J. Abrams is hinting that there might be a cameo in the
movie of a particular character from the “Star Wars” expanded universe that has
been quite prominent in the animated series spinoffs. That character is
one-time Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano, with her name being dropped by Abrams while
being interviewed by Japanese entertainment website “Sora News.” He was asked
about his favorite hero, and after replying “Han Solo,” Abrams asked the question
back to the reporter.
When the “Sora News” reporter
remarked liking Ahsoka Tano, Abrams cryptically said that he – and likely the
rest of the fans of animated “Star Wars” – will need to watch “The Rise of
Skywalker” very closely, before ending the interview then and there. While the
chances of a prominent presence from the former Padawan of Anakin Skywalker in
the movie is very slim, she might at least get a background Easter egg cameo at
minimum. This was done by Lucasfilms in the first “Star Wars Story” film “Rogue
One” (2016), where a space shot of the Rebel fleet included the Ghost freighter from “Star Wars Rebels,”
and its skipper Hera being referenced in background character chatter.
Ahsoka Tano debuted in the 2008 3D-animated
“Star Wars” spinoff “The Clone Wars,” as a Padawan learner for the recently-knighted
Jedi Anakin Skywalker. The two worked as a tandem in the follow-up “Clone Wars”
series before Ahsoka (voiced by Ashley Eckstein) left Anakin’s side for story
reasons, leading to Anakin becoming the Sith Lord Darth Vader in the prequel
film “Revenge of the Sith.” Ahsoka would return during the 2014-18 “sequel”
series “Star Wars Rebels,” fighting her now-corrupted Master and surviving the
events of the Original Trilogy at the minimum.
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”
stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Billy
Dee Williams, Ian McDiarmid and Carrie Fisher in a posthumous appearance via unreleased
footage from the previous Sequel Trilogy movies. The film premieres this Friday,
December 20.
