It is not every day when a
Philippine television network will boldly announce that they have a very
popular K-Pop girl group as their exclusive talents in the country. But that is
indeed what ABS-CBN managed to pull off back in October, when they signed a
joint management contract with MLD, the home label of K-Pop idols MOMOLAND. Not
only is group member Nancy McDonie co-starring in a tele-serye with James Reid,
MOMOLAND itself is now a Kapamilya act. The six-girl ensemble got their chance
to perform as an official part of the ABS-CBN Family in a recent Christmas Special.
ABS-CBN News has it that MOMOLAND was part of the massive slate of
Kapamilya performers who wowed the crowd over the weekend in the network’s 2019
Holiday Special, “Family is Forever.” Their set was fairly standard in length,
with truncated performances of their signature hit songs “Bhoom Bhoom” and “BAAM,”
which were easy sells for the very enthusiastic audience. But what really sent
the Christmas Special viewers through the roof what when MOMOLAND finished up
with their cover of Yeng Constantino’s “Salamat,” with fairly good Tagalog to
boot. But that is not a surprise, seeing as they already sang this cover when
they had their concert at the Araneta Coliseum back in January this year.
In between their initial songs
and “Salamat” however, the members of MOMOLAND took the time to speak and to
and thank their fans in the audience. Nancy McDonie then dropped a bombshell of
good news regarding the status of their upcoming single. It will actually come
out at the end of December on the 30th. This single, “Thumbs Up,”
will be the first the group will put out without former members Taeha and
Yeonwoo, who were announced to have officially left MOMOLAND in November 30.
MOMOLAND has been quite busy with
appearances in the Philippines following their co-management agreement with
ABS-CBN. During the Holiday Special they got to have a group picture with
Kapamilya actress Liza Soberano, a known dead ringer for Nancy. Nancy herself
got a meet-and-greet with the Men’s National Volleyball Team a day after the
2019 SEA Games. The group itself has been constant presences on ABS-CBN’s many
entertainment programs these days.
