This past April and May, one of
the greatest television sagas ever to grace HBO finally came to an end after
nearly a decade. “Game of Thrones,” the dark medieval fantasy epic based on the
books of “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin, put an end to its
complicated political power struggle for control over the Seven Kingdoms of
Westeros in its eighth season, well ahead of the yet-unfinished book series.
Despite critical questions on quality of storytelling and characterization, “GOT”
S8 still set a record for nominations in the 71st Primetime Emmys
this year, even if they only won two.
Where the latest edition of Golden
Globe Awards is concerned however, the last push for the epic HBO series
developed by Dave Benioff and D.B. Weiss was worth only a single nomination
according to The Hollywood Reporter. And
that nomination is Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series. The actor in question:
British star Kit Harington, who has been wearing the shoes of the hapless
bastard-but-actually-royal Jon Snow of House Stark and Targaryen since 2011. He
and three half-siblings (and the actor and actresses that portrayed them) are
the last of the heroic Starks after eight seasons’ worth of harrowing trials.
Upon receiving word of his Golden
Globes Best Actor (Drama) nomination from London, the 32-year-old actor got in
touch with THR to give his opinion on
being the only representative of “Game of Thrones” season 8 in the prestigious
media awards scheduled for next year. "I'm the 'loner Throner,' it seems,”
says Harington as he jokingly imagines being the only person from the HBO
production at the assigned table during the awards night. This is Harington’s
first Golden Globe nom, and for the award he is facing Brian Cox (“Succession”)
and Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”).
Much like the humble and
non-ambitious Jon Snow, Kit Harington was rather self-effacing about his big
Golden Globes break. “I didn’t expect to be nominated,” he says. "I
thought the show might be, but I was just at home, learning lines, and then my
publicists called. It was very unexpected and wonderful." The actor notes
that he feels “Game of Thrones” keeps pulling him back for more surprises every
time he thinks his time spent on the show has ended. He did mention missing his
award-winning costars such as Peter Dinklage, adding that if no other members
of the “GOT” production and cast join him during the awards, then he would
prefer the table to be vacant except for himself.
The official list of nominees for
the next Golden Globes was announced this Monday, December 9. The 77th
Golden Globe Awards will happen January 5, 2020 at the Beverly Hilton.
