The “Crisis on Infinite Earths”
has begun on The CW as of Sunday, December 8. In one episode each of the
network’s five component DC superhero series, the most epic crossover of DC TV,
based on a similar and definitive miniseries event in DC Comics from 1985-86,
will play out to potentially reshape the franchise on The CW. While “Supergirl”
season 5 episode 9 got the Crisis ball rolling in earnest, the follow-up on “Batwoman”
episode 9 continues building up the threat of the multi-verse-destroying
Antimatter Wave and its overseer the Anti-Monitor (LaMonica Garrett). But there
was a surprise plot connection in the tangentially-connected “Black Lightning”
season 3 as well.
Comic Book.com has details on the important developments of The CW’s
“Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event, namely the second part on “Batwoman”
this Monday, December 9. Lead character Kate/Batwoman (Ruby Rose) is part of
the assembled multi-verse team of DC heroes in Earth-1, where they mull over
the death of Oliver/Green Arrow (Stephen Amell). The Monitor (also Garrett)
mentions seven Paragons that can turn back the Antimatter Wave, with two of
them already identified: Kara/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Sara/White Canary
(Caity Lotz). The Book of Destiny has clues on the others, but Lex Luthor (Jon
Cryser) steals it from the Monitor and escapes trans-dimension.
With hints to only two Paragons
learned, two teams are dispatched to find them. Kate and Kara reach Earth-99 to
meet an aged, power-armored Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy) who has become a
murderer of criminals and heroes, including his world’s Superman, causing Kara
to fight him to death. At first it seemed they have lost a Paragon, only to
discover that rather than that Batman, it was Kate all along.
Elsewhere, Lex travels the
multiple Earths using the Book of Destiny to kill each world’s Superman. On a
whim he spares the Superman/Clark Kent of Earth-167 (Tom Welling from “Smallville”).
However, upon finding the Earth-96 Superman (Brandon Routh) and discovering
that he is another Paragon being pursued by a team of Earth-1 Iris (Candice
Patton), the Earth-38 Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois (Erica Durance), he
instead compels Superman-96 to kill Superman-38. Only by Lois and Iris taking
back the Book, plus a speech on Love, does Routh-Superman finally snap out of
it (and make a “Superman III” 1983 film reference).
While the Paragon search
commences, a desperate Sara leads a third team consisting of Barry/Flash (Grant
Gustin), Mia/Arrow II (Katherine McNamara), and Legends member John Constantine
(Matt Ryan) to take Oliver’s body to Earth-18 in an attempt to revive it using
a local Lazarus Pit. This results in a mindless resurrection, with no immediate
solution. Ultimately, Monitor’s associate Lyla/Harbinger (Audrey Marie
Anderson) is contacted by the Anti-Monitor, requesting that she help him
destroy the multi-verse.
The big surprise for Monday night
has been that the follow-up The CW DC series “Black Lightning,” already stated
as being separate from the “Arrow”-verse Earth-1 main continuity, did manage to
figure into the “Crisis” crossover after all. In “The Book of Resistance:
Chapter Four – Earth Crisis,” main character Jefferson/Black Lightning (Cress
Williams) is ultimately whisked from his Earth before the Antimatter Wave
destroys it, while his daughters discover too late the connection of the eldest,
Jennifer/Lightning, to her alternate-Earth counterparts due to her powers.
Williams will join the rest of
the heroes as the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event continues this
Tuesday, December 10, only on The CW.
