In this age of mass media,
information on the latest upcoming movies and TV shows often find themselves
being featured in an event that, from the name, would not quite fit the bill
for giving them prominence: the comic convention or comic-con. Nowadays one can
expect cool reveals and previews of series and movies, from the creators and
producers themselves, when attending some of the major comic-con events in a
year, from New York (NYCC) to San Diego (SDCC) and even overseas. Other
countries have their own comic-cons too. And the one happening in Brazil this
weekend just dropped some nice teases on upcoming movies.
Here are some of the juicy
details given up on the many movies headed the world’s way as showcased in the
2019 Comic Con Experience (CCXP), which kicked off on Thursday, December 5, at
Sao Paolo in Brazil. First, according to Entertainment
Weekly, Warner Bros. gave CCXP attendees a treat by screening the opening
scene of “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).”
The sequence was described as Harley (Margot Robbie) narrating her immediate
backstory before the movie starts, with her breaking up with Gotham
super-villain the Joker and going solo.
There was also a new trailer for
the film, another part of the DCEU franchise which has grown much looser in
connectivity than its MCU counterpart. But both that and the movie’s intro
itself remain exclusive to the CCXP for now. What has been seen are a variety
of new film posters for “Birds of Prey,” all parodying the famous Botticelli painting
“The Birth of Venus.” There is one poster showing the main cast and several
more focusing on the individual members, Harley (Robbie), Black Canary (Jurnee
Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Renee Montoya (Rosie
Perez), Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), and even the bad guys Roman Sionis
(Ewan McGrego) and Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina).

Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures and
Sega’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” film adaptation of the legendary videogame
franchise did not have quite the same presence in Brazil’s Comic Con Experience
this year. But while it had no dedicated panel like “Birds of Prey” above, it
did have a booth exhibiting fan-made variant movie posters created by Brazilian
and other international artists (sample poster art seen above). In other news, official merchandise for “Birds
of Prey’s” DCEU follow-up, “Wonder Woman 1984,” were also spotted at CCXP,
promising more reveals.
With CCXP 2019 running from
December 5 to 8, there are plenty more multimedia blockbuster franchises
waiting their turn to showcase at Sao Paolo. Also slated to show up is Kevin
Feige of Marvel Studios, likely with more juicy MCU details to share with fans.
