Nothing lasts forever, and that
includes an actor’s time in reprising a particularly famous film franchise icon
across multiple movie installments. By that we mean Ian Fleming’s British
secret agent “James Bond,” which has been handled by MGM/UA and Eon and
portrayed by a succession of actors for several decades now. The current Bond
actor, Daniel Craig, might not have the most movie outings as the character,
but he has arguably been attached to the role the longest, if the release of
his latest and final film next year is any indication. “No Time to Die” is
slated to release in 2020, but a first trailer was released this week.
CNN tells us that the 25th film in the long-running “James
Bond” franchise got its first official preview this Wednesday, December 4.
MGM/UA and Universal also need to step up their game in reigniting fan interest
in the world’s most famous movie spy, seeing as his last cinematic adventure
was “Spectre” way back in 2015. Judging from reactions to the trailer thus far
however, it looks like the studios have both caught the necessary amount of fan
attention while still keeping spoilers tightly under wraps.
The trailer starts with a flash-forward
vehicle chase (typical) across a European city, as Bond (Craig) and his love
interest from “Spectre” Dr. Swann (Lea Seydoux) try to outrun a seeming
assassination attempt. It then establishes that Agent 007 has retired from
service, only to be roped into an unofficial mission by his CIA contact Felix
Leiter (Jeffrey Wright). Unfortunately the job turns out to be more complicated,
with Bond crossing paths with another 00 Agent, Nomi (Lashana Lynch) working on
a connected assignment. James finds himself reluctantly returning to the British
Secret Service, where his incarcerated nemesis adoptive brother Blofeld
(Christoph Waltz) points him to a dangerous techno-terrorist, Safin (Rami
Malek), who might have a hidden connection to Swann.
Interspersed with the hint-heavy
dialogue samples are a range of action scenes that are the bread and butter of “James
Bond” as a franchise. From a silent stalk across a snowy landscape, to a
vehicular duel between car and helicopter on a shallow river, to seeing the legendary
Aston Martin using its behind-the-headlight guns again (now upgraded to rotary
mini-guns), “No Time to Die” is shaping up to be a blast of a sendoff for
Daniel Craig, who has contemplated retiring as Bond after this.
Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Ben
Whishaw, Rory Kinnear and Ana de Armas also star in this intense spy action
blockbuster, which is expected to premiere in April of next year.
