The 1980s have been coming back
in big way over at online streaming giant Netflix. It can come in the form of
great tributes in content, such as their runaway hit series “Stranger Things.”
The decade can also be referenced in the several remakes of productions from
that era, particularly in animation. Mattel’s “Masters of the Universe” series
and its female-focused spinoff “She-Ra” have been blessed in this manner, with
the latter rebooted as “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power” and the former
getting an upcoming series sequel created by Kevin Smith. But aside from that,
there is also a planned reboot on the way.
Comic Book Resources reports that in addition to Kevin Smith’s “Masters
of the Universe: Revelation,” Netflix is also producing another animated show
based on the iconic 80’s Mattel toy line. They are working anew with Mattel
Animation to develop a 3D-animated reboot called “He-Man and the Masters of the
Universe,” like the original animation produced by Filmation. A statement by
Mattel Senior VP of Content Distribution and Business Development Fred Soulie takes
note of the global recognition of the franchise, its decades-long history and
lore, and its dedicated fan base.
"The entire team at Mattel
is excited to introduce the world of He-Man to a new generation and, together
with the talented team at Netflix, to reimagine the classic characters in a way
that appeals to kids and families today, while also resonating with the fans
who grew up with them,” says Soulie of the new CGI “Masters of the Universe”
series. While the new animated series has no voice cast or release date yet, it
does have a creative team in Adam Bonnett (Disney’s “Descendants”), Christopher
Keenan (WBAU series “Justice League”) and Rob David, who is also working with
Kevin Smith on the 2D-animated “Masters of the Universe: Revelation.”
A blurb from Netflix and Mattel Animation
would reveal that the “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” show will reimagine
the origins of He-Man, defender of Castle Grayskull and the Most Powerful Man
in the Universe, as he protects the planet of Eternia from the evil forces of
Skeletor. Kevin Smith’s “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” is, as already
stated, a story sequel to the original Filmation-produced animated series.
